Lakes in Fairfax County: Burke Lake, Lake Fairfax, Lake Accotink

Fairfax lakes offer a beautiful respite from a busy daily grind, right in your neighborhood, in Fairfax County, Virginia. Boating, fishing, lakeside camping, hiking, birding, and even playing golf and having fun at a waterpark can be done in beautiful and accessible lakeside parks in the county of Fairfax, Virginia.

Burke Lake Park is located in Fairfax Station, Virginia. Burke Lake is a 218 acre lake with a marina, boat launching dock, fishing piers, and rowboat rental. Burke Lake has great fishing - it has great Largemouth Bass population, as well as Walleye, Muskie, Catfish, Black Crappie, Yellow and White Perch, and a variety of Sunfish and Bluegill. Burke Lake can be fished from a boat, fishing pier, or shore. To fish on Burke Lake a Virginia fishing license is necessary for those over 16 years old. Burke Lake Park marina has a shop that sells bait and fishing tackle (open spring through fall).

Burke Lake is surrounded by Burke Lake Park, owned by Fairfax County Parks Authority. Burke Lake Park has everything for everyone: campgrounds, hiking trails, playground, carousel, mini train, ice cream parlor, golf course, mini golf course, picnic areas and shelters, boat rental, fishing, and an amphitheater.

Campgrounds at Burke Lake Park are open mid- April through the end of October, and have no electric or water hook-ups.

Burke Lake Park grounds are open year-round sunrise to sunset, but park facilities are only open seasonally. There is a small entrance fee for non-county residents on weekends.

Gasoline powered boats, sailboats and remote controlled boats, swimming and windsurfing are prohibited on the Burke Lake. Private boats can be used, inflatable boats with a minimum of three air chambers may also be used.

Lake Fairfax is located in Reston, Virginia, in a Lake Fairfax Park. Lake Fairfax Park is a 476 acre park and a part of the Fairfax County Park Authority. Lake Fairfax park features campgrounds, playground, a carousel, picnic areas, two softball fields and five soccer fields, hiking trails, and The Water Mine water park.

Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole water park is open seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day and offers something for kids of all ages. There is a lazy river, slides, sprinklers, showers, and other fun water activities.

Lake Fairfax is an 18-acre lake with a marina complex and a floating dock. The marina features pedal boats and canoe rentals and tour boat rides. Your own canoe can be launched on the lake for a small fee, or a season boat launch pass can be bought.

No motor boats, sailboats, windsurfing or swimming is permitted on Lake Fairfax.

Lake Fairfax is stocked with freshwater fish - it has bluegills, largemouth bass, channel catfish and crappies. Fishing in Lake Fairfax is permitted on the lake from the dock or from the shore, no fishing is permitted from boats.

Virginia fishing license is required for fishing in Lake Fairfax. Virginia fishing license can be bought online at the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries website. When trout stocking program is operating in Lake Fairfax, an additional trout fishing pass is required. Daily or season trout fishing pass can be purchased at the park.

Campgrounds at Lake Fairfax Park offer 136 camping sites, among them group camping sites with maximum occupancy from 20 to 100 campers. There is an amphitheater (reservation required) available for use by campers. There is a number of family camping sites available without reservation on first-come first-served basis during the summer from Memorial to Labor Day. Campgrounds at Lake Fairfax park are open year-round.

Lake Accotink is 55 acres in size, and is located in Springfield, Virginia, in the middle of Lake Accotink Park. Lake Accotink has boat rentals - canoes, rowboats, and pedal boats. It has boat launch area for private boats. Gas powered motor boats, swimming and windsurfing are prohibited at the lake, but small sailboats are permitted.

Lake Accotink park features unique environment of waterfowl and wildlife, having wetlands, streams and marshes.

A four mile non-paved loop trail suitable for hiking or biking goes around the lake.

Lake Accotink Park also features fishing (fishing permit required), boat rentals of all kinds (rowboats, canoes, pedal boats), tour boat rides, bike rentals, picnic shelters, volleyball and basketball courts, playground, and a mini-golf course. There is also a carousel and a snack bar. Park grounds are open dawn to dusk year round.

Lake Anne in Reston, Virginia is adjacent to a Lake Anne Village Center, the first developed center of this unique planned community.

Lake Anne Plaza hosts many events, outdoor concerts, kids' events, open air market, craft and farmer's market, and is full of shopping and dining establishments. There is a fountain where kids can splash in the summer, and boat rentals; there is a permanent chess table with chess sets available for a free checkout at Reston's Used Book Shop. Every Saturday there is a free tour of Reston history. A branch of Reston Community Center is located at Lake Anne Village Center, and offers many events and activities of its own.
