Five Great Michigan Travel Destinations

Updated on September 17, 2014

Five Wonderful Places to Visit in Michigan

Michigan has so many great places to visit, but here I will highlight five of Michigan's great places to visit. It is the perfect time to plan your next vacation to see some of Michigan's beauty. With the current economy and cost of gas, many Michiganders are looking to explore the fun adventures that are abound less than a tank of gas away. In our family, my husband is deployed this summer, so finding fun mini vacations around our state will keep our family busy this summer. And next summer we will be ready to share our favorite places to visit with Daddy! Even if a trip in the flesh isn't in the cards right now, feel free to armchair (Computer Chair?) travel by enjoying the pictures and video we have here. Daddy can even join in from the other side of the world! Happy Travels!

Frankenmuth

You can find more than just good chicken here.

Frankenmuth is a great choice for family vacations as well as romantic getaways. In fact, my husband and I vacationed here on our "babymoon" before my daughter was born. We have been their since, with my daughter who is now almost five. Just off of I-75, Frankenmuth makes a good day trip stop on your way to another destination as well.

Must See Attractions:

  • The Glockenspiel
  • Eat a Chicken Dinner at the Bavarian Inn (My favorite) or Zhenders
  • Visit the cheese shop and try some 40 year old cheddar (Yum!)
  • Bronner's - Get in the Christmas Spirit even on the hottest days of summer!
  • Stop by the Outlet Mall in nearby Birch Run
  • Mirror Maze - This is great even without kids!

Traverse City

The Cherry Festival is just one great thing happening here.

Cherries, vineyards and beautiful beaches are just some of the things you will find in this historic city. We now have family living in downtown TC, so now we have even more of an excuse to explore all that Traverse City has to offer.

Must See TC Attractions:

  • The Cherry Festival Parade
  • Parasailing, if you are adventurous!
  • Water Park

Mackinac Island

Take a step back in time, but watch out for the road apples.

Another great destination for couples and families alike, Mackinac Island is truly a unique destination within Michigan. Bicycles and horses abound since no cars are allowed on the island. The Butterfly House is best first thing in the morning; the butterflies, cold from the night, will land on you and stay until they have warmed themselves up. Having Tea at the Grand Hotel is a special treat! And, of course, don't forget the Fudge!

Things to do on Mackinac Island:

  • Visit the Fort - Fort Mackinac is a great way to see the island and relive some of its rich history. My first memories of the island are the canons being fired at the ferry boats!
  • Take a carriage tour
  • Visit the Butterfly House
  • Ride a bike around the Island's perimeter
  • Go Horseback riding

Even HGTV thinks Mackinac Island is great.

Detroit

Don't write off Detroit- There is so much you'd miss...

With all the bad publicity the City of Detroit receives, it is often overlooked as a great spot to visit on your vacation. Detroit has wonderful museums like the Detroit Historical Museum, The DIA and the Science Center to name a few. The Fisher and the Fox theaters are wonderful places to catch a show. And then there are the casinos if that is more your thing.

Events to draw you into the city:

  • Downtown Hoedown
  • Lions, Tigers and Red Wings Games
  • Ice Skating in Campus Martius Park (in winter, of course)

A brief tour of Detroit - A little shaky on the camera, but Detroit's beauty shines thru.

Souvenirs for Armchair Travelers - You can get a piece of these Michigan Treasures without leaving your house.

Isn't that only four?

Yup, you've counted correctly... With all the great places in Michigan to visit, I am having trouble picking just one more. I've decided to let you help decide the fifth selection. Please vote below for the city or town you think deserves to be featured. If you don't see your favorite then feel free to add it. Thank You for your help!

What's your favorite Michigan destination? - Feel free to share stories of your Michigan Travel adventures here!

Grand Haven. They have the beach, boats, festivals and best of all - they have Pronto Pups & Butch's Beach Burritos.

Great lens! Tahquamenon Falls in the UP is one of my favorites.

I love Detroit and go there often. Mackinac Island is also one of my favorites, but I don't get to go as often as I would like.

I am not sure about a 5th one but we love Frankenmuth. Just thinking about that chicken is making my mouth water! And I love going in Bronner's no matter what time of year it is.

I've been to Michigan many, many years ago as a student school exchange trip from Russia. Since it was my very first trip to glamorous USA I was excited (though I used to think back then that the anything "America" must be Hollywood :)

How about Holland Michigan? I love the dutch accents, the windmill and especially the lighthouse.
