Updated on March 25, 2013

Welcome to Frederick County, MD

Frederick County, Maryland, is a wonderful place to live and work. There's a wide variety of fun things to do throughout the year and some top notch local businesses.

Here's a list of my family's favorite places, events and businesses in Frederick County, MD.

Favorite Winery

Elk Run Vineyards (Mount Airy)

There are many good wineries in Maryland and Frederick has more than any other county in the state. We haven't visited all of them yet but Elk Run is our favorite so far.

Their wines are delicious and they host several fun events through the year.

Favorite Tea Room

Serenity Tearoom (Frederick)

Since she found Serenity Tearoom, it's been one of my wife's favorite places to go. I've been once and can see why. It's located in a charming old townhouse in the heart of Frederick's downtown historic district. There's a huge selection of different teas with a delicious menu of finger sandwiches and desserts.

Favorite Christmas Tree Farm

Gaver Farm (New Market)

Nothing beats a fresh cut Christmas tree at a great price. If I owned a farm, I'd want it to be like Gaver Tree Farm. They host a fun pumpkin patch for the kids in the fall, too.

Favorite Home Brew Store

The Flying Barrel (Frederick)

The Flying Barrel has what you need for home brewing and wine making. They also have a program for you to brew on their premises using their equipment if you want.

Favorite Model Railroad

Frederick County Society of Model Engineers (Frederick)

FCSME has been building train layouts in Frederick County for over 40 years. Their Catoctin Central Railroad HO scale layout is housed in a real train car...a 70 foot Chesapeake & Ohio car originally used to transport race horses. There's also a G scale garden layout outside.

The club hosts several open houses during the year. It's a fun time for the kids as they follow the trains through the layout. Check the club's website for more info.

Thanks for stopping by! What are your favorite things about Frederick County?
