Gravel Ponds ♥ My Camping Home away from Home

Updated on June 13, 2017

Camping at Gravel Ponds... The place to be

Swimming, boating, fishing and lots more. Oh, boy.

Events, concerts and the best show of Fireworks for Independence Day I have ever seen. I really mean it. You'll see more about that below.

This very popular members-only campground is located only 20 minutes from our home in a beautiful country-like setting in the town of Wheatland in Upstate New York. Since it's so close we commute back and forth from our home and for work, too. See some of our camping friends in the picture to your left. There is a huge community of friends here. Everybody says Hi whether we know each other or not.

We have been RV camping at Gravel Ponds since 2000. We've seen the park grow to it's current size since that time and have enjoyed every minute of it. We enjoyed the expansion so much we have gone from pull-out camping (leave after the weekend) to vacationing on a permanent site.

A bonus about the history of the ponds here: It's a reclaimed gravel pit, hence the name Gravel Ponds! Isn't that cool?

I hope you enjoy our second home.

The Swimming is great at Gravel Ponds! - And there is free access to boats, too.

Party Loungers are all the rage at Gravel Ponds

I expect quite a few if these are going to appear this year according to the private club Face Book posts.

Row boats and paddle boats. Oh, what fun!

By the way... the RV in the background is not usually there.

Gravel Ponds also hosts camper shows.

If you need an upgrade, go view the new or used models,

pick what you want, and they will deliver it to your site!

My Favorite Place and Time for Coffee

Sunrise at Gravel Ponds

Aaah, Sunrise.

Quiet...

no kids, no pets.

Just the sound of birds in the short distance.

This is my idea of Heaven.

Hope there's a cup of coffee waiting for me.

Lots of Events - Classic Car Show

I didn't even have to pay him to take a picture of his pride and joy. Imagine that.

More Events - Classic Tractor Show

When I first heard of a tractor show, I thought it sounded lame.

Little did I know... They are really cool!

Sometimes we have more Ponds than usual

Gravel Ponds. Oops! Another pond!

Just a little rain during a previous season on one day.

OK, a lot.

Gravel Ponds has AWESOME 4th of July Fireworks shows - These are some of my best photos from 2005-2009

I've been told by some of our 4th of July Party guests that these fireworks are better than the closest 6 Flags show.

The show is produced and set up by the owner, family and crew of Gravel Ponds.

The photos included in the slide show are taken by me at our site.

So you might ask... do you go anywhere else to see fireworks?

Nope. Don't need to go anywhere else. Don't want to, either.

Forgive me for the lack of editing? This is my first video.... ever.

Fireworks Video at Gravel Ponds - by one of my neighbors?

Nope. I think someone who parked nearby during the show.

They did catch the Finale, though.

Poll: Do you camp by RV or Tent?

Anyone can take this poll, so please do.

Which way do you like to camp?

In the past you might have seen a Hot Air Balloon! - Maybe even hitched a ride...

See big people acting like kids! - It's not time for a swim?

Marshmallows anyone? Smores? How about a roasted hot dog? - Can't go camping without a great campfire

Cooking at a campfire...

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, oh my.

Pies, Sandwiches and 'Smores, oh boy.

Easy to use, and clean by fire. A meal or snack around the campfire is pure neccessity.

There is just something mesmerizing about a great campfire.

A major focal point for nighttime entertainment at any campsite...

Scary stories, a late night snack, or a place that parents can chat when the kids go to bed.

Is Gravel Ponds something more than a campground now?

With the addition of a Bar and Restaurant, it's not just a campground anymore. Gravel Ponds is more like a Resort!

Sorry, it's not alway Sunny... - ... but this is actually during the off season in December

Free winter storage through the winter, though, with deposit for the next year's season. What a deal!

Phew, I don't have to park the humongous RV in my driveway anymore.

Can't beat that.

Someone suggested Gravel Ponds to me a couple years ago, but I wasn't interested. Now I'm reconsidering. Your lens provided a bunch of info and pics not available on the website, so thank you! I'm not sure I like the lack of trees and hiking areas.

This sounds like an awesome place to get away from it all - and so close to home. You are lucky to have it. 5*

@verymary: Oooh! I didn't even occur to me to explain the campground name. It's a reclaimed gravel pit quarry. :D Thanks so much for the heads up.

Very exciting place and beautiful view, too! I've never been there but surely would like to go there if I have the chance to.

I've been asking my hubby to go camping in NY for the past couple years. I'll show this page to him and see what he says. :)
