The Great Australia Quiz

Updated on February 17, 2014

How much do you know about Australia?

Known also as The Great Southern Land or The Land Down Under. How much do you really know about Australia?

As an Australian, I am very proud of my country and our landscape which is unique and extremely diverse.

We have just about every ecosystem that you can get and also have many amazing plants and animals which are found nowhere else on earth. I guess a few years of isolation will do that to a place!

Most people would have at least a little bit of knowledge about Australia. Where it is located, our culture and so forth, but how much do you really know? Take a tour through this page and you will most likely come out the other side more knowledgeable on all things Aussie. Well, maybe not all things, but you should know a bit more by the end hopefully and you will also earn yourself a truckload of points!

So where is Australia anyway?

Frommers Guide To Australia

If you are planning on visiting Australia, then I highly recommend purchasing one of these books beforehand so that you can study up on things to do, local cultures and how to get around in this vast land.

I used a Frommers guide book last year whilst travelling to the USA and I found it to be really helpful in making my trip more enjoyable and less stressful.

This photo was taken at Miami Beach on the Gold Coast in Queensland. The tall buildings in the distance are the tourist mecca of Surfers Paradise. Yep, the beaches here in Australia always look this good. ;-)

Australian Geography

Australia is a large country with a fairly small population compared to similar sized nations throughout the world. It is also the only country which is it's own continent due to the fact that the country takes up the entire island. Lets see if you can do better (or just as good) with this section.

Does anyone remember this song from Australia? "Kookaburra sits on an old gum tree, merry merry king of the bush is he, Laugh Kookaburra, Laugh Kookaburra, Gay your life must be"

      • sierradawn lm 3 years ago

Only in the movies: Crocodile Dundee a zillion times, and Young Einstein, about the Tasmanian apple farmer. I heard Rolf Harris sing "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" somewhere around 1957 and have been playing his album ever since. I think all the songs on there are so cool. Waltzing With Matilda has also always been one of my favorite songs. I have been enjoying my trip here, to Australia.

      Australian Fauna

Between 80 and 90% of Australia's animals are endemic to the country. This means that they are only found here in Australia and nowhere else on earth. This is a major tourist draw card as people flock from all over the world to catch a glimpse of Australia's unique and interesting wildlife.

Living in Australia means that you do have to live with snakes. You do not encounter them every day, especially in the cities where they are rarely seen. But if you are venturing out into the bush or into rural areas then you need to be prepared as you will most likely encounter one at some stage. This Carpet Python came to visit us this week at our house. It explored both our cars and faced off with our cat before heading off into the scrub again an hour or so later.

      Australian Flora

Australia's plant life is just as unique as it's animal life with a great majority of plants being endemic to this continent. Unfortunately since the time of European settlement, many invasive species have been introduced and are rapidly taking over some of the more native areas. Over the last 200 years many plants have also become extinct due to farming, mining and logging practices. Even today with our awareness of needing to protect our most vulnerable natural environments, many plants as well as native Australian animals are still threatened with extinction.

      Australian Sport

Australians are mostly very passionate when it comes to sport. Many Aussies will travel to see their favourite team play each week, or at the very least watch them play on TV. Many will even watch their favourite sports several times per week even when their team is not playing!

As we are blessed with good weather year round in most parts of the country, we are also an active lot. So we can be found participating in local sports or cheering on our children most weekends as well. Do you love sport? Do you know much about Australian sport? We will soon find out.

      Australian Cities

Most of Australia's population live in or around the major State Capital cities. This is due to the fact that these cities were strategically placed where there was the availability of fresh food and water to sustain a large population. Outside of these major centres, there is not really anywhere else in the country that has enough rainfall, fertile soil, flat ground and access to shipping ports to support large populations. All of these factors are vitally important when it comes to sustaining large growth and most of Australia is just too dry to sustain large amounts of people.

      Australian Rivers

Australia's waterways are the lifeblood of the nation. Without these waterways, cities would never have been built, transport in the early years would not have been possible and the food that is grown in the country today would not have been possible. Unfortunately most of these rivers flow from the coastal mountains straight into the sea, limiting population growth and restricting it to coastal areas.

I came back to take your quiz again because it told me to "study hard and try again." so I did. I hope you do a Lens on the didgeridoo. I love the haunting spirituality of its sound and rhythms. I hear the northern Australians have been playing it there for around 1,500 years. I would love to go see the paintings on cave walls of a didgeridoo player and two Kakadu song men participating in an Ubarr Ceremony, in Ginga Wardelirrhmeng. I peeked inside your "Frommerâs Australia". If I ever get to go, I will definitely get that to bring along.

I think I need to pack up for The Land Down Under. I've got lots to learn and there would be no better place to actually pick up that slang. Of course, those snakes make me shudder. Okay. More than shudder. I would need to have a snake wrangler with me at all times. Holy moly! Great quiz. Really challenged me and I love that. Yours is a fantastic land.
