Hilton Head Vacation - Healthy and Fun Plans

Updated on July 23, 2013

Hilton Head Vacation Plans

Vacationing in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina is a visit to the beautiful outdoor scenery of the Low Country where you can experience beaches, woods, marshes and a variety of sea and land wild life while enjoying luxury accommodations, if you desire. Additionally, with a little planning and effort, you can make it a healthy vacation for you and your family incorporating exercise and good nutrition - something often lacking when taking a vacation.

Hilton Head Island Beaches

Great for Walking, Running, Biking

Hilton Head Island is probably best known for its beaches. At lower tides it has a wide expanse of hard sand (the sand is very fine, so it packs down tightly). It makes it perfect for walking and especially bike riding, both of which are extremely popular. If you can get out there first thing in the morning, or at the end of the day, you can catch some great sunrises and sunsets. You can put in a good several miles for some great cardiovascular exercise while enjoying the view and the weather.

If bringing your own bicycle to Hilton Head is an inconvenience, don't worry! Hilton Head Bicycle Company has been around for years, and has a variety of bikes available for daily or weekly rentals, and they include free delivery.

In addition to riding on the beach, you must experience the miles of Island bike paths through the Plantations. The many bike paths wind through woods of beautiful pines and old oak trees (watch out for the many squirrels!), past well-manicured golf courses and man-made lagoons (you might see an alligator sunning itself - don't get too close!) and you will see the back yards of some of the many gorgeous Hilton Head homes. You will get in some great exercise for your legs and hip flexors as well as the enjoyable visual stimulation.

Walk to the Top

A "must-see" in Hilton Head is the Harbour Town Lighthouse, located in Sea Pines Plantation, on the Harbour Town Marina. Ninety feet tall, and built in 1970 it offers a spectacular view of the marina full of luxury yachts, as well as a view of the 18th green of Harbour Town Golf Links, home of the well known Heritage Golf Tournament. There is a gift/souvenir shop at the top of the lighthouse as well. Enjoy a variety of specialty shops as well as a playground for the children. Walk to the top of the lighthouse, and spend some time on the playground with the kids for extra exercise and a few hours of fun.

If you are ready to get really adventurous, get in contact with H2O Water Sports. They will take you on a Kayak tour in the calm waters of Calibogue Sound where you can get up close and personal with the dolphins. You may also see egrets, herons, osprey, and bald eagles. Paddling will give you a great upper body workout while experiencing scenery a lot more unusual than the inside of a gym!

H20 Water Sports also offers para sailing, wave runners, water skiing and paddle boarding - all offering a great opportunity for some good exercise, and loads of fun!

You owe it to yourself to take a little time for rest and relaxation - release of stress is also good for your health. Faces Day Spa, conveniently located mid-island, has been voted "Island's Best Day Spa" six years in a row. Take a break to pamper yourself with a facial, massage, manicure, or pedicure. Treat yourself to the sauna and steam room, or the jetted hydrotherapy tub.

Eating out is always a treat, and should naturally be a part of your vacation "experience". But how many of us go overboard and then regret overeating when we get home and step on the scale? The key is to eat healthy, and eat smaller portions - you can still get some excellent food.

My recommendations:

Ruan Thai Cuisine - Thai food is healthy, and you can go completely vegetarian if you'd like. They also have very good seafood dishes. Reasonable prices, open for lunch and dinner.

Tapas Restaurant - An excellent selection of salads, seafood and meats, all in smaller portions, great for sampling and sharing as well.

Roastfish and Cornbread - A very creative full vegetarian menu in addition to a varied seafood menu. Many organic items. If you avoid the fried items you can get a fine healthy meal.

If you are really serious about taking a "healthy" vacation on Hilton Head, research further the Hilton Head Health. It provides varied personalized programs for weight loss that give you the tools, knowledge and practice to live a sustainable, weight loss lifestyle. They combine fitness, nutrition, and motivation to help you reach your weight loss goals while being able to enjoy the same activities that one would experience on their own Hilton Head vacation, but with more structure aimed for specific results.

We love Hilton Head...it's my husband's favorite place on the East Coast. We go there every chance we get, including a few months ago for our Anniversary. Thanks for sharing and doing a great job on the lens!

I am from SC and lived in Bluffton for several years, across the bridge on the mainland from HHI. It's been a while since I've seen any of these businesses. Thanks for the memories!

I've never been but it's surely do-able for us this year. Didn't know they had bicycle paths. And I'd love to walk to the top of the lighthouse. Very nice lens.
