Hematite Lake a Magical Place In Lbl ky

Updated on March 21, 2014

Hematite Lake of Lbl Ky

Every now and then you come across a place that is so magical and beautiful, that you never want to leave. Hematite Lake is just that! It is a place were families can come and enjoy the day, fish, hike, or even search for the rumored hematite there! It's a photographers dream, a child's fairytale, and a family's perfect picnic spot. This is one of the greatest places near my home that I have enjoyed going to since my early childhood.

Hematite lake is located in LBL, KY. The Land Between the Lakes or (LBL), is a gorgeous national recreation area in my hometown. It is a great big stretch of land located in the middle of Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Attracting thousands of people year round, this is a really popular tourist area. It has hundreds of trails, campgrounds, fishing spots, prairies, and so much more! There are so many great places in LBL that I'd love to talk about, but I chose to write this article on my very favorite spot which the locals call Hematite lake.

Hematite lake is actually just a nickname given to a wonderful part of Kentucky lake were hematite is rumored to be found! It is a special little recreation area, were families gather and make long lasting memories. It is so beautiful with the stones that stretch across the water and the swampy greenery. This spot is truly breathtaking, and a wonderful place to go if you take a trip to LBL!

What was that you heard about hematite? Several people I have spoken with say that they have found hematite here, but I haven't ever been so lucky. Although, I haven't really spent a lot of time searching for it since I'm so easily distracted by the other fun things to do!

I hope you enjoy reading about this wonderful place, seeing the beautiful photos, and learning about a new spot in the world. Who knows, maybe you'll be lucky enough to visit someday. This is definitely one of my favorite places to be in the summer. I can't wait until our next family trip there!

First Memories

My first memory of Hematite Lake was probably when I was around 10 years old. We had been fishing up in LBL and mom and dad took us to a new spot. We packed the picnic basket and cooler, and I remember Dad starting a fire. We all ate hamburgers and hotdogs on a concrete picnic table overlooking the lake. Later my mom took us on the hiking trail, and I remember how exciting it was to see such a beautiful place! The view is gorgeous, and very captivating. We always found new fun things to do in LBL, but Hematite Lake has always had my heart. I kept coming back as an adult, and this is now my favorite place to go when I visit Land Between the Lakes.

The possibilities of what to do here are endless. Some days I have drove out here and set up a chair, brought a little cooler, and kicked back reading my favorite book. Although it attracts several visitors year round, its usually not too busy and often times early morning you'll be the only one in the picnic area. Other times I've brought my camera and took pictures of the beautiful scenery, I love nature photography! Then there are days were we go as a family to have a picnic, fish, or explore. I've even came out here looking for hematite after talking to someone who claimed to have found some!

Fishing, Hiking, Picnicking, Photography, and Rockhounding - So many fun things to do at Hematite Lake!

There are so many fun things to do at Hematite Lake, but these are some of the most common things that people do here.

Fishing:

I have been fishing here, and you can catch some very nice Bluegill. There are several other types of fish you might catch including Catfish, Bass, Crappy, etc. But chances are with the shallow water you'll mostly catch bluegill! Although when Catfish are spawning sometimes they do come up in the shallow part of the water, and that would be a good time to try to catch some delicious catfish. Ky does require a fishing permit, which you can find information on here: http://fw.ky.gov/Licenses/Pages/Fees.aspx prices vary based on the kind of permit you get. Everyone has their own fishing stories, but I am proud of my 16 pound catfish I caught near Hematite Lake!

Hiking: This is a great spot to hike! There is a hiking trail that is over 2 miles long that circles around Hematite Lake. Even if your not the athletic type, this isn't too difficult of a hiking trail. It's actually pretty flat. It is a beautiful trail, that normally doesn't take too long to finish. If your like me though you'll be stopping and looking at the scenery and wildlife and might consider grabbing a bottle of water, or your camera!

Picnicking: There are a few picnic tables, and even grills set up near the lake here. You can bring some charcoal and use one of the grills that are there, or gather some wood and make your own little fire. Just be sure and put it out good before leaving! Its definitely a good spot for roasting hot dogs or marshmallows, or packing a nice lunch for you and your family. I'd also bring a cooler with your picnic basket, because I'm sure you'll be staying a while. Nothing beats a nice cold bottle of water, on a hot day. This is my favorite picnic spot for sure!

Photography With such a beautiful place, there is no wonder that photography would be a big thing to do. The spot is perfect for amazing lake photos, and even better nature photos. There is wild honeysuckle growing in spots if you come at the right time of the year. You never know what you will come across to photograph (like the little turtle I found). There is such a spectacular view of the lake, trees, and rocks that you will be snapping pictures all day. Several birds fly by, that make for great photos as well. I even seen a pelican there once! You can take gorgeous shots of the breathtaking steps that stretch across the water as well. So if your a photographer like me, then this is definitely a place to be to get great shots!

Rockhunting Several people venture out here to look for hematite and other rocks and minerals. This is a spot rockhounds should visit if ever in the area. If you happen to find any hematite, I hope you'll come back here and leave me a comment about it!

Hunting Geodes in LBL

I also really love hunting for geodes, another fun thing I do when I visit Kentucky Lake or the surrounding lakes and rivers. I think Hematite Lake would be a good place to look for them as well! I usually go to Lake Barkley which is very close, and find them there. If you've never been geode hunting and live near creaks, deserts, lakes, rivers, etc. then you are definitely missing out. I think everyone should give it a try at some point in their life. There is nothing more special than cracking open a boring rock to find sparkling crystals inside. To me, its like a nature treasure hunt. If you're interested in learning more, here is a link to my other article where I tell you all about geode hunting and how to get started!

What beautiful photos and lovely writing! It's only 30 hours away from my house! Like you, I'm a rock-hound and am forever looking at the ground. Hematite would be a fantastic find.

@Lynn Klobuchar: definitely so! Very peaceful and mesmerizing, one of my favorite places to be is by the lake!

Just beautiful. There is something about lakes and water isn't there?

Cool, I've been in and out of KY several times but usually on the way to somewhere else. This looks like a great place for a day trip.
