I want to sleep in a castle

Updated on July 10, 2014

I want to sleep like a Princess

I want to sleep in a bedroom just like this one in Neuschwanstein Castle, where Ludwig II of Bavaria grabbed forty winks after a day's hunting.

I wonder how it would be to crash out in a royal four poster every night.

Could I feel a pea under that thick mattress like the Princess in the fairy tale?

A better look at that bedroom

The leitmotif is the legend of Tristan and Isolde, the star-crossed lovers feature in the murals, in the carvings on the door, the ceramic figures on the tiled stove and on the blue silk bedhangings.

Castles were built for Defense

From the earliest times. homes, cities and palaces were constructed with defense in mind.

Walls were built of enormous thickness and great height. Fortifications were foremost and above any thought of comfort. Some of these fortifications were surrounded by a moat, others flanked by towers and others with satellite towers attached by aerial walkways..

Castles were designed both to defend a country and to dominate the population. A pretty sad statement on humanity in general.

Can I sleep over in Camelot?

I've been a King Arthur groupie since I was nine years old and I would dearly love to spend the night in Camelot.

The most vexing problem, of course, is to find out where Camelot is, and not be fobbed off with imitations. If anyone knows where I can find Camelot, and how to book a bedchamber, please let me know.

An American Castle?

You have to hand it to the Americans. Not to be outclassed by the magnificent castles in Europe, they built their own in California,

Originally belonging to newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, the property was donated to the state of California in 1957.

Architect Julia Morgan spent 28 years getting this huge sprawl into shape and Hearst called it "La Cuesta Encantada" ("The Enchanted Hill"). I wonder how he slept nights?

Hearst Castle is now a state historic park and the estate, with its considerable collection of art and antiques, is open for public tours..

It would be so much fun to sleep in a castle for just one night - definitely a bucket list fantasy.

There are some interesting Youth Hostels in Europe - some of which, I seem to recall, are (minor) castles

I want a castle of my own so I could make it to my liking. Then it would truly be a castle.
