I want to swim in a Giant Pool
I want to jump in the largest pool in the world
I learned to swim about the same time I learned to walk. At least, I learned to dog paddle and to stay afloat in the water. It was a necessary skill for any child living close to a beach.
Those childhood days on the beach are gone now, and I prefer to swim in pools with no danger of jellyfish or the occasional hungry shark.
Before I kick the bucket I'm going to swim in the giant pool near near Valparaiso, Chile.
Some not insignificant facts
It's hard to get my mind around these figures. The pool is one-kilometre in length, holds 300,300,000 litres, and has a 37 metre deep end.
Let me put that another way ..
It's more than 1,000 yards long, covers 20 acres, has a 115-foot deep end, and holds 66 million gallons of water
You won't be surprised when I tell you that this tropical blue lagoon has received the nod from the Guinness World Records as the world's largest pool.
What a pool!
I'll need to take a deep breath before I try swimming a lap underwater in a swimming pool of this size.
Why build a pool on the ocean?
Why would anyone build such a large, lagoon-like pool right next to the ocean?
Because the water stays much warmer in the pool and much calmer.
Chile isn't a very hot place, it's colder than the climate I'm used to, but the sun warms the water to 26c, nine degrees warmer than the adjoining sea.
And there are no jellyfish!

I'll need energy drinks to swim across the giant pool
No, it's not real blood. Just a rich iron supplement!
From the manufacturer
"Fruit punch flavor packs 4 hours of energy along with iron, protein, and electrolytes. Not only does Blood Energy Potion have a similar nutritional makeup to real blood, but it has the same color, look, and consistency of blood.".
How big is big?
Do you fancy doing a few laps here?
I can relax in shade after a dip
I avoid direct sunlight as much as possible. A lap (ha!) across the pool is enough sun exposure for me.
Comes with carry bag, sandbags and extra-long stakes. A convenient changing room, too. Shade and privacy!
UV Guard protection, SPF of 50+
How can I get to this giant pool?
This huge pool is part of the San Alfonso del Mar Resort on the southern coast of Chile, so obviously the first step is to get to Chile. But can I find any information about the resort?
My problem is not understanding Spanish. I do wish there were some information in English somewhere. If you come across any, please let me know.
How about you?
