Ice Hotel Adventure

Updated on October 14, 2014

An Experience Like No Other

Looking for an adventure you and the whole family will never forget? See the Northern lights, take a dog sled ride, and stay in a hotel where everything from the tables and chairs to your very own bed are made of ice.

The ICE HOTEL in Jukkasjärvi Sweden

There are several Ice hotels around the world which offer a unique vacation getaway. This page will focus on the The first and the largest in the world, ICE HOTEL, located in a village 200 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, in the town of Jukkasjärvi Sweden.

Summers in Jukkasjarvi are traditionally filled with adventure tourism - white water rafting, survival training, fishing and canoeing as well as leisure travelers and guests flying up for one night just to see the midnight sun. Winters traditionally were rather slow. That is until the advent of the ICE HOTEL.

The ICE HOTEL is different every single year. As soon as winter begins, a team of snow builders, architects, designers and artists from all over the world gather to create each years version of the hotel. Starting in November and opening in sections, the ICE HOTEL is built until all rooms, the ice bar and church are fully complete by December 20th. See below for more details on the building process.

Thousands of guests come to sleep in the rooms made of ice and snow, over a hundred couples share wedding vows in the Ice church each season and many cold drinks are enjoyed in the ice bar. Visitors also enjoy snowmobile tours across the winter wonderland, learning the fine are of ice sculpting, dog sledding, the Northern lights and Sami culture.

How Is The ICE HOTEL made?

Dividing walls are then built between the corridors in order to create rooms and suites. Ice blocks, harvested at springtime from Torne River, are the transported into the hotel where selected artists from all over the world start create unique sculptures and designs. Each year the hotel is different as are the rooms and designs.

Construction takes place in stages, the first being completed on December 10th and each week thereafter a new section becomes complete. The ABSOLUT ICE BAR then opens on DEcember 12th and the Ice Church is completed on December 23rd. More suites and rooms become available each week until December 30th when the construction of ICE HOTEL is fully completed.

When the hotel is completed, thousands of guests come to sleep in rooms made of ice or share their wedding vows in the ice church and many cold (and warm!) drinks are enjoyed at the ABSOLUT ICE BAR.

The ICE HOTEL is open until spring arrives and the sun melts it back into the Torne River.

ICE HOTEL has set a goal become CO2 negative by the year 2015.

To achieve this goal they (in partnership with Gävle Energy),will produce more renewable energy than they consume

Accomodations At The ICE HOTEL

type=text

At ICEHOTEL you can choose from different kinds of accommodation. It is recommended that you combine one COLD night at ICEHOTEL with the warm accommodations during winter. To sleep in a room made of ice and snow is a surreal experience and a memory for life. You sleep in thermal sleeping bags on a special bed built of snow and ice, on reindeer skins. You are awakened in the morning with a cup of hot lingonberry juice at your bedside.

Make Your Stay Comforatble And Warm

To keep warm in frigid temps, think layering. Wool makes an excellent base layer and down is light weight and super warm.

Explore The Nearby Estrange Space Center

And have dinner under the stars

Just 45 km outside of Kiruna one can visit the Esrange Space Center, the Swedish Space Corporation's (SSC) site. It is an international center for space and environmental research. Researchers from around the world come here to conduct research on board sounding rockets, high altitude balloons, satellites and with help from ground-based instruments. This has applications for TV-broadcasting, weather forecasting, GPS navigation and climate research.

While visiting, you can view the Northern lights and purchase a ticket for the first passenger spaceship scheduled to launch from the site in 2012

See The Northern Lights

While you may not see the sun while visiting the ICE HOtEL in winter time, the land still shimmers with color. The white snow reflects a heavenly light show - glittering stars, a full moon and the magical, mystical Northern Lights.

The Northern Lights,or Aurora Borealis, appear in a clear night sky as swirling rivers of greenish-blue light. Sometimes they are quite vivid, other times hardly perceptible. They arise from an interaction of charged particles from solar wind being captured by the Earth's magnetic field and drawn towards the poles at very high speeds.

Although most often greenish blue, its possible for them to be red or purple. The different colours depend on the types of atoms, their speed and charge. The most intensive auroras occur at a height of about 100 km and can be 10 to 30 km high, although they can extend, with diminishing light intensity, several hundred kilometres upwards to, at most, 1000 km

As a winter visitor to ICE HOTEL, there is a very good chance of seeing the Northern lights.

Thanks For Stopping By - I would love to hear from you!
