Interesting Things To See In BC: The Home Of A Thousand Faces
Visit This Eccentric And Unusual Treehouse Home Located In The Middle Of An Upscale Resort Town
The friendly heritage towns of British Columbia nestled deep within the beautiful mountains of the Kootenays and the Columbia Valley are rich with community spirit, eccentric and entertaining characters, outdoor sports and culture, colorful history and lots of interesting things to see and places to visit.
I am writing this article in response to a photo/writing challenge and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share a few photos of, by far, one of the most unique and interesting discoveries from my many road trips throughout BC, The Home Of A Thousand Faces.
Driving through the beautiful resort community of Radium, BC, for a relaxing evening in the hot springs with the family, we spotted one of the most unusual sights smack dab in the middle of the upscale resort community. At first glance, all I saw was the overgrown grass, nailed up boards, a worn down truck overflowing with shrubbery, splashes of bright colors, and I was unsure what I was looking at. It looked like a cross between a country roadside fruit stand/treehouse/fort and then I noticed the intricately carved faces peering back at me from the odd structure, piquing my curiosity to pull over for a closer inspection.
Intrigued? Continue reading to learn more about The Home Of A Thousand Faces and to view my collection of photos that I snapped that evening of this whimsical weird home that in my humble opinion, is one of the most interesting things to see in BC, Canada for the locals, tourists and passersby to visit.

The Home Of A Thousand Faces
One Of The Most Unusual And Interesting Things To See In BC
The Home Of A Thousand Faces belongs to local resident and artist, Rolf Heer, otherwise known as the Radium Woodcarver, along with his friendly pet goats. The rugged mountain man is well known with the locals for his colorful and eccentric character, entertaining everyone with his delightful stories, love of nature and beautiful wood carvings. Originally from Switzerland, he now lives in Radium, BC Canada most of the year, while spending the winter months traveling abroad in South America, Asia and Europe.
Using recycled and salvaged materials, Heer remodeled an old motel he bought in the 70's into a unique and interesting structure resembling a treehouse. While a treehouse in the middle of a ritzy golf/ski town may seem a tad odd, what makes this even more interesting is the hundreds of beautifully detailed chainsaw carvings surrounding the entire property ranging from small driftwood carvings to giant over-sized chainsaw sculptures. His home has even been featured on the hit TV show, Weird Homes.
For a small fee, you can wander through his art shop and gallery which is overflowing with small to life-sized chainsaw sculptures of animal and people faces, flower planters made from stumps and hand carved wooden clocks, which are scattered among the different levels and tiers of the treehouse. You can even visit the goats very own "rooftop chalet" which includes a lush green meadow.
Judging by the hand painted lettered signs nailed to the front entrance of the home, it was clear that friendly visitors were welcome to browse and stop in for a visit. Unfortunately, he was not home that evening and we did not get to go inside. Perhaps he was on his daily evening stroll with his pet goats. I definitely plan on stopping here again the next time I am passing through in hopes of meeting the friendly artist and having the opportunity to browse through his art gallery.
