Kolkata-The City of Joy
Travelling through India is an incredible experience for anybody and for me, the city of Kolkata was the highlight of my trip. This city gave me joy in a way that I had never experienced before and honestly, the vibrant culture and incredible history made me fall in love with the place.
Kolkata is located in the east of India, close to the border with Bangladesh. This city is one of the most populated cities in the world and during the British reign of India, it was the capital of the country. This historical significance is really highlighted through many of the buildings in the central part of the city which show distinct signs of Victorian architecture. A perfect example of this is the Victoria Memorial. This landmark is a massive marble building which was build in the honor of Queen Victoria and had the intentions of rivaling the Taj Mahal. Although this is not the case, the Victoria Memorial is a real sight for any tourist and its history shows us the importance of this city during the British reign.
In addition to the British history, Kolkata is also known for many other amazing things. One of those is Mother Teresa. The great Mother Teresa took to the streets of this incredible city to do her amazing work. Today there are many places around the city where poor people are fed and looked after as a result of the hard work and dedication of Mother Teresa. This feature of the city is really eye opening and my time in these missions really changed my views on life.
Kolkata is a massive city and it is an incredible place to visit. The city is filled with people and as a tourist it is like visiting a a whole new world. The city has an atmosphere that is amazing and it is a place with so much life that it is almost impossible not to be happy here. For anybody travelling though India, it is a must visit. The city is incredible and the experiences you will have here will be like ones you have had nowhere else.
