Lake Tahoe Pictures and Facts and Lake Tahoe Travel Tips

Updated on June 18, 2014

Lake Tahoe Travel

Planning a trip to Lake Tahoe? Let me get you started with some beautiful pictures of the area along with Lake Tahoe information.

Not familiar with Tahoe? It's a beautiful lake located in both California and Nevada.

I also have some travel tips for you as I visit there often. Lake Tahoe is a year round vacation destination. Relax at the beach during the summer or ski in the winter. There's always something to do for fun.

Traveling with kids? I'll share some fun things to do with them.

Lake Tahoe Water

Lake Tahoe is known for is it's beautiful clear water. One thing that attributes to this is the melting snow that makes it's way into the lake each year after winter.

At one point, there was 100 feet visibility. This number has now fallen to 70 feet. This is a cause for concern and the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, located on the Sierra Nevada College campus, is currently researching this.

Lake Tahoe Travel Tip #1

The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village is open to the public. Here you can learn about the history of Lake Tahoe along with current research through displays, videos and a cool 3D movie.

It's environmentally friendly and free!

Lake Tahoe Facts

According to the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, Lake Tahoe is the 2nd deepest lake in the United States and the 11th deepest in the world.

If emptied, it would take 600 years to refill. Sixty three streams pour into it, while only one flows out into the city of Truckee, CA.

Lake Tahoe Travel Tip #2

In South Shore, there are hotels that advertise access to a private beach if you stay with them. Yes, there is a beach, but it isn't private just to the hotel. It is shared by several hotels in the area and the general public can be admitted for a fee.

It's called Lakeside Beach and it's a winner for families. There are all sorts of rentals available including kayaks and paddle boats. Beach umbrellas can be rented for $15 for the day. Lifeguards are on duty until 5:00pm.

Hiking in Lake Tahoe

If you enjoy the outdoors and like to hike, Lake Tahoe offers numerous trails from easy to difficult at various locations around the lake.

If traveling with kids, be sure to check out the interactive trail at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. If you prefer to be challenged, then head on over to Desolation Wilderness.

Lake Tahoe Travel Tip #3

Have kids and want something fun to do? Check out Magic Carpet Golf in South Shore. This place is fun for little ones as well as teens.

Lake Tahoe Winter

Tourism is very important to the economy of the Lake Tahoe area. During winter, it's a skiing paradise. The winter of 2011/2012 posed a problem. There was no snow!

To encourage and accommodate visitors, artificial snow was added. Although it wasn't the same beauty as seeing snow on the trees, skiers still got a chance to hit some slopes.

Lake Tahoe Travel Tip #4

Enjoy bike riding, but don't want to pack them for your trip? No problem. There are numerous bike rental locations around the lake and lots of fun bike trails as well.

Lake Tahoe was formed approximately 2 million years ago. At over 6,200 feet above sea level, Lake Tahoe is known by many nicknames including The Lake in the Sky.

It is 72 miles around and resides in both California and Nevada, with the majority of the lake being in the state of California.

I so want to go there! The pictures are so beautiful. Reminds me of Crater Lake in Oregon, where I've been, although I know Tahoe isn't a volcano.

I used to go to Tahoe from time to time when I lived in San Francisco. A lot of my friends are from Northern CA, so they are die-hard Tahoe fans. Fun story: One of the last times I went camping there, I was bit by a mosquito on the eyelid and my whole eyelid swelled up. It was a good look. I had to wear sunglasses every time we went into town because it looked like someone had punched me in the face.

Lake Tahoe is my absolute favourite place on earth that I have been to. Yosemite is a close second! I loved the fact that you have added lots of personal experience to this page in the form of photos and information. I wish that I lived a little closer so that I could visit more often. I worked at Heavenly in 97/98 and revisited the place this year in March. Cannot wait until I can return again! :-)
