London, England: Things to See and Do

Updated on December 16, 2014

Things to Do and See in London, England

London is a fascinating, beautiful historical city with a huge variety of things for tourists to do including a huge variety of free art galleries and museums, an aquarium and the historic zoo, but most people will do same few things: Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, The Tower of London, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre etc. This article include a few other suggestion of some other things to do: Alternative theatre productions (i.e. not just big show musicals), Botanical gardens, interesting restaurants and wonderful parks, castles, stately homes and theme parks, such as Legoland in Windsor (near London)

London is hosting the 2012 Olympics, with events located around the city and in other locations across the country.

Windsor and Legoland

Venturing a little outside London you can see Windsor which is famous for the enormous castle in which Queen Elizabeth lives (some of the time when she isn't at Buckingham Palace, Balmoral etc.) and is also the location of Legoland. "Windsor and Eton Riverside" station is just a short train ride from London Waterloo (about an hour) which takes you right into the heart of Windsor and Eton: Shops, restaurants, bars, the castle and river are all immediately outside the station and Eton school not far away. For Legoland you will have to take a shuttle bus or taxi from just outside the Theatre, next to the station. Tickets for Legoland, the train and shuttle bus can all be bought from the railway station in central London.

Legoland is an excellent day-out if you have children of the right age. The rides are not as exciting as at other theme parks, so they will not be good for older roller-coaster enthusiasts and there is still a 0.9m (three foot) minimum height restriction on many rides, but for children ages six to early teenage or lego enthusiasts Legoland could be a very memorable day-out.

Andy, thanks for this delightful London, England lens! A sizable batch of my friends will be there in August (really Oxford) for the Emily Dickinson International Society annual meeting. Alas, your lens will have to suffice my urge to merge with them and Londoners. SquidAngel Blessed!

You know, I do believe there probably are more tourists enjoying London these days thanks to mother nature and that volcano. No?

I sure do enjoy traveling through your lenses. I know it isn't as good as actually being there but it has to be the next best thing.
