UAE's national flag carrier Emirates, currently, holds the title for offering the world's longest flight on a commercial airliner. The non-stop flight from Dubai to Auckland (New Zealand) is a daily scheduled flight with a duration of 17 hours and 15 minutes! The total distance covered is 8,823 miles (14,326 kilometres).

This record-holder commercial flight was inaugurated just days ago, on March 2016, when an Emirates Airbus A380 flew all the way from Dubai to Auckland. However, the regular flight will be operated by a Boeing 777-200LR aircraft—an aircraft named Worldliner, because it can connect any two destinations in the world without needing to stop for a refuel.

Flights Can Also Be Ranked By The Distance Travelled

Most of the top-ranked flights on the list of the top 10 longest flights are only long for a certain route. For example, the route Dallas FW - Sydney takes 16 hours and 50 minutes. However, the route Sydney - Dallas FW only takes 15 hours and 35 minutes. This is due to several factors, the significant of which is the direction of winds. If the wind is headed the same direction as the flight is going (tailwind), the flight time is reduced. If the wind is blowing in the opposite direction (headwind), the duration of the flight is increased.

Since the flight durations on flights connecting the same two cities can be different, it is essential to rank the flights based on the total distance covered by the flight.
