Palenque Pyramids in Mexico

Updated on January 16, 2015

Palenque Ruins in The Jungles of Mexico

Palenque is my favourite of all of the Mexican archeological sites: less touristy than Chichen Itza or Teotihuacan Pyramids, near Mexico City and in a wonderful jungle setting just north of Guatemala. Monkeys wooping in the distance and the beautiful sights and sounds of the jungle make this an excellent place to visit while in Mexico.

Palenque Ruins and Pyramids

Paleque Ruins with their excellent Jungle setting were my favourite. Starting from the main entrance we walked round the main plaza, then down through the jungle to lower exit, back up again through jungle to the rest of the site, howler monkeys and other jungle-life making lots of noise all around us. Fantastic. An absolutely beautiful setting. There is also a small museum at the ruins.

Nice lens. I featured the temple at Palenque in my thesis. The king Pacal and his remarkable tomb and sarcophagus were great studies. Good stuff

@ouriloilo: Yes, that's amusing. There is however, quite a big square between the pyramids, so maybe there could have been a market there. In modern Mexican Spanish, I think palenque means cock-fighting arena, but it might just have meant any kind of arena, back then.

@Delacroix: Thanks very much. Most of the pictures were shot on fairly slow slide film, then scanned. Some challenging lighting conditions for film, but worth the effort, I think (I've almost entirely gone fully digital now though)

I've been to Chichen Itza (or what we ended up referring to as "Chicken Pizza") and enjoyed it. But the best fun was taking a side trip in our rental car to Ek-Balam where we were able to climb to the top of the Acropolis and tomb of Ukit Kan Le'k Tok'. I imagine that as that site becomes more popular they'll be restricting foot traffic in order to preserve the structures as they have at Chicken Pizza!

I visited your Zazzle gallery. Boy you have been places. My parents took me to Mexico twice on family vacations back in the early sixties and then again in the early 70's. I made it all the way to the top of the pyramid of the moon and had a good look at the pyramid to the sun... which is huge. From there I decided not to even try to climb it. Sure was a nice view, and the trips have inspired my thoughts and my art ever since.

Lucky you to have traveled to so many places.
