Restaurants in Kefalonia: "The olive garden"
Where to enjoy good traditional food in a friendly environment.
Are you searching for a good restaurant in Kefalonia? This means that either you are already in Kefalonia, in the Ionian Sea, western Greece, or you are planning to go there. I think you have made a very good choice. I can promise it, since Kefalonia is the island I come from. You will have a great holiday anywhere you decide to go, whether you stay by the seaside, or in a little cottage in the interior of the island. Myself, I am rather on the side of staying in places which are not overcrowded, but this is a personal taste.
In a future lens I may write my suggestions about the best places to stay and visit, but for the time being I would only like to present some nice restaurants in Kefalonia where you can enjoy tasty food in the shade and be treated kindly by the hospitable owners.
Under the shade of the olive trees
The first place that I would like to suggest is owned by a very good friend of mine. Her name is Heleni and, whether in her own home or in her restaurant, she is one of the most hospitable persons that I know. Her little restaurant is situated very cose to Lake Avythos.
Heleni's restaurant is a small and humble snack-cafe, a kantina, as we call it, but the place where it is situated, the delicious food and the hospitality of Heleni and her family makes it equal to a high class restaurant. Half hidden among the olive trees, it is a cool and shady place that offers relief and relaxation in the heat of the Greek summer.
As we leave the southeastern port of Poros and head towards the port of Sami in the middle of the eastern coast of Kefalonia, the landscape becomes mountainous. Cypresses cover the slopes of the hills, piercing the sky with their bladed shapes. Olive and maple trees on either side of the road are our silent companions to our travel.
The passage from the mild, coastal landscape to a wilder, mountainous one is tempered with the view of these trees. Turn after turn, hill after hill, the first village appears. Agios Nikolas, the village next to lake Avythos, with small, tile roofed houses welcomes the weary traveller. At its exit Heleni's restaurant will provide a pleasant stop for rest.
The entrance to the little restaurant
Two large stones, remnants from the past, carved by time, remind the visitor of the hard work needed in older times to extract olive oil, when electrical machines had not been invented yet.
A beautiful, symbolic entrance, for a restaurant run by a couple of olive press owners.
A small restaurant with a big heart
Heleni is a traditional Greek lady brought up in a little village in Southern Kefalonia. Hospitable, smiling, and a great cook. She manages her small business and at the same time she looks after her family, her husband, and her three kids. Not only does she cook for her restaurant but she also prepares jams, traditional sweets, she also crochets and grows her own vegetable garden which provides her with fresh vegetables for her tasty dishes.
All dishes in Heleni's restaurant are prepared with fresh, organic vegetable and local meat. They are also certainly prepared with love and care.
