The Eurolines bus system is an inexpensive way to travel through Europe. The buses are first class, they go everywhere, and you can reserve seats in advance on the internet.

Eurolines is a coalition of independent bus companies that operate under one blanket name. They serve thirty-two countries, reaching hundreds of destinations across Europe from Ireland to Russia and from Norway to Portugal. They also serve Turkey and Morocco. Eurolines coaches are comfortable and upscale.

You can reserve a seat by e-mailing the Eurolines agent for the country where you are traveling. Agents are listed by country on the main Eurolines website at You pick up and pay for your ticket at the agent's office in your city of departure. The Eurolines office is usually located inside the long distance bus station, but it can also be a travel agent in the city.

The Eurolines Pass gives you unlimited travel to forty-one cities across Europe and enables you to book hotels at discount rates. There are two types of passes, a 15 day pass costing 205 euro youth/ 240 euro adult mid-season, and a 30 day pass costing 270 euro youth/ 330 euro adult mid-season. This is about half the cost of a Eurail Pass, and it allows travel on every day within its time period. Eurolines also provides travel to more countries than Eurail, like Latvia, Estonia, and Russia.

British Eurolines books discount accommodations through their partners Hostel World and Octopus Travel. Hostel World handles youth hostels, while Octopus Travel has a wide range of hotels. For information and booking go to

Europe's extensive campground system offers a budget alternative to hotels and youth hostels. This is how many Europeans travel.

European bakeries and pastry shops also sell cheap, ready-made sandwiches.

A few words in the local language go a long way. Learn to say "Good morning, thank you, how much, and okay" wherever you are. Use a pocket dictionary for more complex communication.

Understanding a country's culture is even more important than knowing its language. Reading about a country before you travel brings rich rewards.

Bus travel is a good way to meet people and experience the local culture
