quiz - roman empire quiz 4
To look at Rome today and the ruins of massive buildings, temples, aquaducts and other things that are everywhere around it one wonders why the past is so important that the remnants of it cannot be removed. That is until one touches a stone lying discarded on the ground, or sits on a step in the colosseum, or climbs into one of the ruins and peers onto the landscape and then you stop wondering for you know. You can almost hear the roman army marching, hear the beat of the drums, and smell the sweat of their uniforms.
Here is power, domination, control, history and the past alive again. Here too you get the sense of the fear and persecution that took place against slaves, captured prisoners of war, the persecuted and the untouchables of a society that showed the rest of the world how to do it. Here is the format, if you like, of every future society north and south, east and west and here too the incredulous that was built on wealth captured or stolen from abroad and upon which the Romans stood tall.
The Emperors who Created its History
The Roman era saw the rise of emperors but it also saw queens, who ruled in many a country, not yet part of the Roman Empire. They dressed like emperors and had power to make rules, order executions, even make war and they were very much in control. Their armies were as vicious as those of the later Roman emperors and they ruled in their own right.
The most famous of these queens was, of course, Cleopatra. Her affair with Julius Caesar produced a son and heir while her later affair with Mark Antony ended in her death, probably by snake bite. But Julius Caesar was also doomed. Just as he was about to be crowned emperor of Rome he was assassinated,

The Confusion and Wars
After Caesar's assassination Mark Antony and the heir Octavian joined forces to fight Mark Antony and Cassius at Philippi. Following this victory Mark Anthony went to the east and aligned himself with Cleopatra while Octavian went west. Here he fought other opponents and finally returned to Rome to restore peace with Antony, who then married his sister.
The Roman Empire was one of constant fighting, threats against and assassinations of emperors, marriages of convenience, murder by design and superstition that reigned everywhere. It is little wonder that confusion about exactly what did go on is still evident in the flimsy history and distorted records, many of which were made years after an event.
Still it has gripped the imagination of students of its times and we are endebted to those who have ploughed through what remains of the records to piece together a semblance of its history,
