Unforgettable Skippers Canyon Tour in Queenstown New Zealand

Updated on November 19, 2012

Skippers Canyon is without a doubt a subject you will talk about.

A tour into Skippers Canyon which is located in the back country of Queenstown (which is on the South Island of New Zealand) is certainly worth your holiday time: landscapes that are only accessible in this area, historic remains at every corner that tell a tale of gold mining history, a familiar atmosphere in a comfortable 4WD minibus and of course your interaction with your Driver/Guide will create a truly unforgettable experience. Skippers Canyon is only accessible through Skippers Road - an adventurous mountain road on which we know how to take you safely and comfortably from one highlight to the next.

Highlight Number 1: Coronet Peak Turn Off into Skippers Canyon

This is where the fun begins!

Coronet Peak near Queenstown is well known for its ski fields. We will take you up nearly to the top of Coronet Peak and turn there into Skippers Road. From here, you have a beautiful view over the Wakatipu Basin: Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu on your right in the back, Arrowtown to the left and right opposite stand the Remarkables - a breathtaking view over this majestic mountain range.

But this is only the beginning! Next stop is the top of Skippers Saddle which is the entrance into Skippers Canyon. Here your tour starts which is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Queenstown.

And this is where you will be going: This is Skippers Canyon! - Have a promised too much?

Yes, that's the back country near Queenstown - this is our "hidden paradise" which we are very passionate about.

You see, we do take you into Skippers Canyon with our very comfortable 4WD minibuses, but our tour is not a bus-tour. You get to step out of the bus, walk on this unique and historic mountain road and take all the pictures you want of this little gem we call our working place.

Those stops are certainly highlights number 2 and 3 and 4 and counting.

While Skippers itself is entertaining enough, we will share our little secrets we know about the historic background of the canyon.

But The Best Is Yet To Come

A little cuppa on the edge...?

We do understand that travelling makes thirsty and even a bit hungry. That's why we even cater for this occasion on our unforgettable Skippers Canyon tour. We take you to Skippers Point, the little township that was 'alive and kicking' at the turn of the last century. Today, there is only the restored Schoolhouse and a small Home-Stead left. All other buildings have literally vanished right after the gold rush was over.

And while you go into those remaining buildings to see how it used to be back in those days, we prepare a little something for you to nibble away!

...and this (I am sure...) will be your highlight number 5!

Skippers Canyon Is Always Worth Your Time

Whether Sunshine or Rain, in Spring, Summer or Autumn!

There is no bad time to come and visit Skippers Canyon. This area is always beautiful, always secluded and never over-run. You won't find big crowds here, but find the odd traffic on the road.

But hey: it would be selfish to keep this hidden secret literally hidden away from you and others, right? And that's the reason why I share our sightseeing tour here with you. Our half-day get-away from the huzzle and buzzle of Queenstown is a sure winner to not only impress you, but your family and friends at home, too. We learned from our customers who already joined our well-established sightseeing tours that the pictures and videos taken of Skippers Canyon are a topic you will talk about long after you returned back home - and that's a promise!

Skippers Canyon In Motion - This is what you will experience.

Have you been here? - I would love to hear from you.

@Fcuk Hub: Hello there, thanks for your comment. It's true: Skippers Canyon is a treasure and still not overrun - so it remains as one of the secluded places in New Zealand.
