South Haven Lighthouse-a Light for all Seasons
Lighthouse at South Haven, Michigan
The lighthouse in South Haven, Michigan has been welcoming water traffic for over 135 years. It is a wonderful bright red steel tower that stands at the end of the pier with a catwalk leading up to it.
It was a windy day when we were there and it was beautiful to see the waves splashing up against the lighthouse. Although we were there in early October before the freezing temperatures, I have seen photos of the lighthouse encrusted in ice. It must be quite a site to behold.
In this lens, I will share photographs that I took while visiting South Haven, along with winter shots from other photographers.

South Haven Lighthouse - Beautiful Red Steel Tower
The lighthouse in South Haven is on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth to the Black River.
The current 35 foot tower has been operating in South Haven since 1903, when it replaced a wooden frame tower that was built in 1872.
View from end of Pier - Long Catwalk
The long catwalk helps to maintain the lighthouse when the lower level becomes too icy to walk upon.
The long pier is a great way for visitors to walk out to visit the lighthouse when it is not too windy.
Minature of Lighthouse - South Haven Lighthouse
Great minature of the South Haven Lighthouse. I like the sailboat on this model.
Visiting the Lighthouse - A Windy walk out the Pier
The day we visited South Haven was a clear, but chilly fall day. As you can see in the photo the waves were beating up against the pier. It was a cold walk down the long pier to see the lighthouse up close.
Shopping near the Lighthouse - A small Friendly Town
The city of South Haven was a friendly little town. Up the hill from the lighthouse were several different shops and restaurants. It was a very pleasant time walking around the town and visiting the shops. Everyone was very friendly and very proud of their town.
We stopped at a small cafe and had a great bowl of chowder. A wonderful way to spend a fall day!
View from on top of the Hill - As seen from Shopping Area
As you walk down the street in the shopping district you get some great views of the lighthouse. I couldn't resist stopping and taking a few more photos.
Small Light in the Harbor - Across from the Bright Red Tower
This small light also helps to guide the way into the harbor.
