St Lucia Brisbane
St Lucia Brisbane
St Lucia has become a suburb with one very prosperous business dominating and shaping the suburb. The business is The University of Queensland or UQ as it is known to most in Brisbane.
St Lucia is one of the special Brisbane suburbs that has the Brisbane River bending around its borders. The Brisbane River at St Lucia is still very wide and has good water flow. The river gives rise to some exclusive river front homes with spectacular views of river activities such as rowing and a view of West End, Fairfield and Yeronga on the opposite river bank.
St does have a transient population due to the high number of students studying at the University. Over the Christmas break the population of St Lucia is at its lowest. You can actually see some 'For Rent' signs on apartments. Early in the new year all these apartments and houses rented to students will quickly fill up.
The University of Queensland has a great campus with many top rated sporting facilities and amenities for students. The campus also has cafe's and is like an extension of the general community. Students attending UQ are largely from Australia but there is a significant overseas student population.
St Lucia Travel
Travel to and from St Lucia can be in the form of Car, Bus, Ferry or walking. Walking to St Lucia has been made much easier with the construction of a bridge from the University to Fairfield on the opposite side of the river. The bridge also has a busway which gives students the option to live on the opposite side of Brisbane, especially around the Fairfield, West End and Yeronga regions which are very close to the bridge. Busses also can be caught to Indooroopilly or the city as St Lucia is very close to the centre of Brisbane. The ferry and City cat leaves from The University of Queensland Campus to take you to the city, Southbank, Bulimba or any river suburb destination.
How to attend University and get free accomodation.
I do quite a lot of St Lucia locksmith work for students. I was talking to one student who was just finishing her degree and ready to leave St Lucia. She was getting the locks changed back to give the key to her landlord.
She was telling me how she hadn't paid for any accommodation all the time she went to university at St Lucia. She achieved this by renting a house with 5 bedrooms. She then sublet the extra rooms in the house at a price that paid for the entire rental price of the house. So she in effect actually made a small profit on the rooms she let out. While this might not work for everyone I thought it was a very clever idea that would have saved her a lot of money at a time she needed it most.
Property St Lucia
Most of St Lucia's properties are either free standing houses or blocks of units. The units are becoming more dominant as houses make way for cheaper and more affordable accommodation for students. Suburbs such as Indooroopilly are still a good alternative to living in St Lucia. The rent in Indooroopilly will be a bit cheaper and it is only a small bus ride or bike ride to UQ.
