The latest news about Stoorn

The building of this giant Moose has now started. The winter is here and some of the construction has to wait. A road is built to bring up the material to the place where our Moose will be erected.

About the big Moose Stoorn

On the border of Lapland, between the counties of Västerbotten and Norrbotten, mount Vithatten (White hat), 510 meters (1 673 feet) above the sea level, is situated and this is where this enormous moose is going to be placed. On a clear day you are able to see 9 church towers from the top of the mountain. Among these the church of Skellefteå town about 85 km (52,8 miles) away.

The outlook 45 meters (147 feet) above the top of Vithatten, is offering views including both alps and sea, besides forests, lakes, rivers, wetlands as well as cities and villages.

The moose is to be placed with two legs in the community of Arvidsjaur in Lapland, Norrbotten county, and two legs in the community of Skellefteå, Västerbotten county.

Thorbjön Holmlund got the opportunity to see the view from the eyes of the moose, hovering in a helicopter 45m above Vithatten. Why was this the defining moment? Well according to Thorbjörn the view was even more amazing than he could've ever imagined. With Vithatten's 511m + the height of which the helicopter was hovering, he was able to see the mountains, the sea, rivers, villages and all types of landscapes that are unique for this area in Sweden.

The result of Thorbjörn whitnessing this tremendously beautiful view was that NO other place would stand a chance as to where the moose should be positioned. Should it be built, Vithatten would be the place.

To enter the moose you'll either ride along the road that will be built all the way to the top, or use the wood-paths alongside the mountain. On the top you'll enter the pinetree in wich the elevator will lift you 35 m to the mouth. Inside the moose there will be 3 floors with a surface of ca 500 m², the content of these floors will be conference-rooms / exhibitions / consert-hall etc. The neck will contain the kitchen and the restaurant with a surface of 250 m². The outdoor café will be on top of the antlers and will have a surface of 100 m². Parts of the branches on the big pine tree will serve as a big umbrella, protecting the outdoor café from rain and snow.

Stoorn has become an issue

One month ago there was a complain about the building

Land owners around Vithatten has complained about this project. The permission to build is still on hold. In a fantastic Northern Dialect Torbjörn Holmlund is telling about Stoorn. Even if it is in Swedish you have to see how happy he is now when the Environmental Court of Sweden has approved the building and the ones who complained have been turned down. He says that Stoorn will be as big as the Ice hotel for Tourism in Northern Sweden.

Home page for the REAL ice hotel

Ten thousand years ago, glaciers carved a riverbed and the Torne River was born. Since then, the crystal-clear, pure water of the Torne River has flowed freely along its 600-kilometer path through Lapland out to the sea in the southeast.

The ice hotel - This hotel is really a hotel with all comfortableness

ICEHOTEL is situated in the village Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The heart and backbone is the River Torne flowing freely through the unspoilt wilderness. Covered with a meter thick ice layer winter time the river is the source of all our art, architecture and design. The pure water and the steady movement of the river creates the clearest ice possible.

I am glad the attack was not fatal or that the photographer did not get hurt. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds wonderful. I worked in Lapland occasionally when I lived in Stockholm 15 or so years ago and ever since I have acquired the nickname "Moose"

Fascinating. I never knew a moose structure existed. I've seen a dinosaur, and fish on TV. I forget what channel, though. I think moose are one of the most beautiful creatures of all.I love them.
