The Butterfly Park in Dubai: Just Like a Dream

Updated on December 21, 2017

The Begining

Dubai has myriad places to visit and pass the time. The latest is the butterfly park which is both innovative and unique. I read about this park a few days back. As my American girlfriend was visiting me, I decided to take her to see the Butterfly Park. This is the latest addition to the entertainment scenario in Dubai along with the Garden of Lights.

Butterflies remind one of fairies, goblins, and pixies. They make the world enchanting with their colorful wings. They are associated in the human mind with fairies, tales of Peter Pan and Shakespeare's " Mid Summer Night Dream" immediately come to mind. Not forgetting the many tales of fairies with colorful wings like those of butterflies.

The Butterfly park conjures up a similar vision when you visit t. It is located close to the Arabian Ranches in Dubai and can be easily reached by bus or taxi at any time. The park opens in the morning and closes at 6 in the evening. Th entrance fee is AED 50( about $ 13). The entry ticket does look a little costly, but once you have visited the park and left, the realization dawns that perhaps its money well spent. Handicapped persons and small children are given a free entry.

The Garden of Delight

The Dubai Butterfly park is the largest such park in the world. It is housed in 3 domes and is home to nearly 15000 butterflies species. If one has to savor the butterflies and their habitat, one needs at least 3-4 hours. But this time flies like the proverbial winged horse Pegasus, as one gets the chance of seeing something not ordinarily available. Presently there are 26 species of butterflies, but very soon they will increase to 40. The butterflies are from all over the world and the organizers have spent time and money in making available this collection for visitors to Dubai.

The three domes are interconnected and once you enter inside you can't come out. Outside the domes is a flower garden, also shaped like a butterfly, where one can relax after walking through the butterfly park.

Inside the park, the butterflies are lively and animated. If one stands quietly, they will come and sit on your hand, head or any other limb of your body. It's a colorful world and creates an ethereal world of color and brightness. Giant air conditioners maintain an optimum temperature for the butterflies.

For information of readers, I will add that this park is the worlds largest indoor butterfly park and covers an area spread over 4000 sq. meters. If one is diligent and has time to spare, one can witness the actual butterfly lifecycle & gain insight into the miraculous metamorphosis of the butterfly species through the Butterfly Glass House. One can thus appreciate the butterfly in all its stages of growth.

There is a small souvenir and museum also attached to the park. One can buy, Butterflies framed inside a glass frame. This does not find favor with me. There is a similar analogy from Shillong in the Assam state of India, where also butterflies are in great abundance, because of the climate. Earlier Butterflies were sold pressed inside glass frames in Shillong, but the government stepped in stopping this barbaric practice. I really can't support this framing of butterflies inside glass frames.

Last Word

The Butterfly Park and museum is a feather in the cap of the Dubai government. The park is meticulously maintained neat and clean and the butterflies tended with care and concern. Visiting the park is like stepping into the world of fairies and magic.

The garden has an excellent coffee shop with snacks available. After spending some hours in the park, a hot cup of coffee can be invigorating. One is again struck by the all-around cleanliness and one can observe that maintenance standards are high. The butterfly domes are extremely well cared for.

The climate-controlled domes, housing the butterflies will ever remain in the mind of the tourist. All said and done the Butterfly museum along with the Garden of lights is something not to be missed while in Dubai.
