The Balkans' pearls

The Balkans often referred to as the Balkan peninsula or Southeast Europe. The word Balkan is Turkish and means mountain, but Balkan isn't only synonym for mountains and wars. There are a lot of pearls of beauty on the Balkans, whose beauty breaks breath.

One of the best Balkans' pearls is Mostar, my hometown, in beautiful Herzegovina, with Mediterranean type of climate. I was born in this nice city, in Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina which was a part of Yugoslavia, that was , for me, the most beautiful country in the world.

The most recognisable symbol of Mostar is the Old Bridge that was built in 1566, when the Turks invaded and conquered Mostar, Sultan Sulejman Magnificent ordered the construction in Mostar of a new bridge. This is a stone bridge with a single arch with 28 metres wide and the bridge was a masterpiece of Ottoman engineering. The old bridge was designed by Mimar Hayruddin who had succeded the impossible mission to cross the Neretva river with a single span stone bridge.

Unfortunately, in November 1993, during the war, the Old Bridge was destroyed. After the war this bridge was rebuilt and a grand opening was held on 23 July 2004. In July 2005 , UNESCO, finally inscribed the Old Bridge and its closest surroundings on the World Heritage List.

The best thing is that you can drink coffee or juice near the Old bridge, in Old Town, in a lot of restaurants and cafes on the banks of the River Neretva, whose green colour is fantastic. If someone comes and sees this beauty, this person can never forget this image and the atmosphere.

I recommend national speciality-CEVAPCICI. These are little pieces of grilled minced meat. Otherwise, the region is noted for its quality wine-Zilavka and Blatina, tobacco, fruit, vegetables and a lot of national specialities.

Also, every summer there is a manifestation,International Cliff Diving, titled the Red Bull Ikari that joined brave young men to leap the 24 metres from the top of the graceful Old Bridge into the River Neretva. As the River Neretva is very cold and fast, this is very risky feat and the most skilled and the most courageous people can attempt it.

Outings,trips to the Adriatic sea

You can combine travel to Mostar and outings to the Adriatic sea. Many agencies organize travels to the Adriatic sea. Also, there is regular transport to the Adriatic sea. My favourite place is Gradac in Croatia, that is about 74 km far from Mostar. Gradac has very nice, sandy beaches with pinetrees. In this amazing place, you can enjoy on these beautiful beaches or you can enjoy drinking cold drinks or maybe, eating seafruit, mussels, or amazing chocolate ice-cream. Swimming and relaxing in clear, pure and warm sea water is amazing. The blue colour of this sea is exceptional in the world.

You can sit in the shade of a pinetree, drink cold drink and have the most beautiful view to the blue sea, breathing amazing fresh sea air and listening to sounds of sea waves.

Also, the old city Dubrovnik is a pearl of beauty with old historical monuments. Every stone talks its story and history. There are a lot of hotels, restaurants, nice beaches in Gradac and Dubrovnik.

The Balkans Peninsula

The Balkans

The Balkan Peninsula isn't only synonym for the wars and unhappiness, because it has its pearls of beauty and good people. There are more pearls , for example, Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia, the spa Vrnjacka banja, mountain Kopaonik in Serbia, mountain Jahorina in Bosnia and Herzegovina, places Budva,Sveti Stefan in Montenegro....

Discover these pearls of natural beauty! If you see these pearls ,you will never forget them. These pearls wait for you to discover them.

I found their secret. And when I am not in my hometown, in Mostar, I keep its beauty in my mind and in my heart.

The bridge on the Drina - a book about the Balkans by IVO ANDRIC

Ivo Andric got the Nobel Prize for his work in 1961 for his great book The bridge on the Drina.

Fantastic the Bridge on the Drina

The Bridge on the Drina (Phoenix Fiction)
The Bridge on the Drina (Phoenix Fiction)

This is a VERY NICE BOOK IN ENGLISH about people in Bosnia and its history. This book was written by Ivo Andrić who got the Nobel prize for this amazing work. This book serves as a reliable guide to its people and history. This is a perfect Bosnian trilogy and this book can explain the events and wars many years later, until now regarding the causes of present situation.

Many famous writers describe this book...The Bridge on the Drina is a vivid depiction of the suffering history has imposed upon the people of Bosnia from the late 16th century to the beginning of World War I. As we seek to make sense of the current nightmare in this region, this remarkable, timely book serves as a reliable guide to its people and history.

"No better introduction to the study of Balkan and Ottoman history exists, nor do I know of any work of fiction that more persuasively introduces the reader to a civilization other than our own. It is an intellectual and emotional adventure to encounter the Ottoman world through Andric's pages in its grandiose beginning and at its tottering finale. It is, in short, a marvelous work, a masterpiece, and very much sui generis... Andric's sensitive portrait of social change in distant Bosnia has revelatory force." — William H. McNeill, from the introduction

"The dreadful events occurring in Sarajevo over the past several months turn my mind to a remarkable historical novel from the land we used to call Yugoslavia, Ivo Andric's The Bridge on the Drina." — John M. Mohan

Jumping from the Old Bridge - Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina

My amazing hometown Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Read these amazing poems by Aleksa Santic

Aleksa Santic is the biggest poet from Mostar. His poems are full of love and deep feelings for women ,his hometown ,MOSTAR and people born in his hometown.

These are the the verses of the famous poem WHERE ARE YOU by Aleksa Šantić, the big poet who was born in Mostar.

Where are you?

When pearls of dew at night are strewn
On meadow flowers in early bloom,
My bosom starts a longing tune:
“Where are you, where are you?”

...

When, relaxed, I fall asleep,
When my soul calm is deep,
In my heart whispers creep:
“Where are you, where are you?”

When the dawn glows red
In the shimmer of jewels clad,
My soul stirs a song in bed:
“Where are you, where are you?”

When great rejoicing is on high
And gloom prepares a heavy sigh,
My love begins to sing the rhyme:
''Where are you, where are you?''

here are you?

Gradac - Adriatic sea

Fantastic beaches in Gradac

My favourite place by the Adriatic sea is amazing Gradac with fantastic beaches. My favourite beach from my childhood is the beach in front of old resort Đuro Salaj. In this place , there is a unique combination with pure chrystal sea water, beautiful little white sand and shadow of green pine trees . I have never seen this fantastic combination somewhere else.

The scent of rain in the Balkans - by GORDANA KUIC

This is an amazing book about the Balkans.

The Scent of Rain in the Balkans
The Scent of Rain in the Balkans

VERY NICE BOOK ABOUT BALKANS by Gordana Kuić. I was reading this book so fast because it is very interesting. The Scent of Rain in the Balkans follows the destinies of, not only Jews, but also Serbs, Muslims and Catholics during two major historical events — World War I and World War II.

In his review of the novel, David Albahari wrote:

“ The Scent of Rain in the Balkans possesses all the characteristics of a good book. In her attempt to show the destiny of a Jewish family living on Bosnian soil, the author has gone much further: she shows that the inevitability of historical developments is inescapable; she paints history as a monster who continually returns in cycles, but also as a mad joker who is ready to change the colors at any moment.

The novel is also a document of a world that no longer exists – the world of the Sephardic Jews of Sarajevo. Therefore, this novel is an important contribution to the rather meager Jewish literary output in Serbia, but grows beyond the boundaries of such a definition and undoubtedly takes a more general significance."

You have some interesting information. Can I suggest ( as on oldie here) that you split your intro up into several modules eg, intro, then a module about the history, then one about things to do..... and also, squidoo do like a square intro photo- check on HQ for the info on this. Good luck on Squidoo!
