The Delights of Traveling: Cherating, Malaysia

If you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, Cherating is definitely the best place for that. Definitely off the beaten path and the only way that you would know about this place is by word of mouth or serious Googling.

When I first got there, I stayed at Club Med for a few days because a friend treated me for my birthday. Honestly, I was so shocked when I got there and was told that it was everything was included. I had never been in that situation for a long time. It was so peaceful because I absolutely love the beach. However, obviously because Club Med is definitely out of my budget, I moved over to the main town and honestly, it was pretty awesome.

When I say sleepy beach town, I seriously mean it. Most people that go there are there to surf and all the locals there are either surfers or fishermen. The whole town has a really chill vibe. The whole time I was there, I started my day with a joint and a coffee in my little beach hut. Read for a bit, did some writing, maybe went out for a surf. And that was my whole day. I loved it because it was it was so nice chill compared to Kuala Lumpur.

You may be thinking, literally there doesn't seem like there isn't anything to do. But, sometimes that is what you need. There are two coffee shops there that are really cool. Ombok, which is probably my favorite because it has a very surfer vibe. It is styled like a beach hut and it has surfboards all over the place. The owner is a really chill surfer dude who literally has a sign that says "gone surfing" when he closes. The other cafe is a bit of a walk down the street called Loca. Great coffee and good food, but if you want to get work done on the computer, think again because there is no wifi at the cafe.

Food wise, there are quite a few local places to eat for super cheap. But, if you want to splurge and have some Western food, go and try Eco bar. Their food is really good especially the Lamb Shank, which is their speciality. But, everything else is pretty good as well. They only serve beers at the bar because there is Beach bar next door that doesn't serve food. So, normally people would go to Eco Bar for dinner and a few beers and then Beach Bar next door for drinks on the beach.

The main reason that people go to Cherating, like I said before, is to surf. There are lots of places along the beach and the town where you can rent surfboards and if you are a novice, you can also sign up for classes.

This place is literally a place to unwind. To get here, you could take a bus but it won't stop in the town itself. You can either go to Kuantan or Terengganu and take a Grab from there, or hitchhike if you are adventurous. There aren't a lot of tourists there in the main town, but the locals are super friendly and you will want to come back for sure.

Happy Travels!
