The Santorini Volcano

Updated on September 10, 2014

The first recorded eruption of the Santorini volcano is in 1500 BC

The island of Santorini (or Thira) is home to a still active volcano that is submerged within the centre of the island itself. The first recorded eruption of the volcano is in 1500 BC although many scientists believe the island was itself created by an eruption of the volcano before this. This chain of thought is supported through some of the tales from Greek mythology that tell of the island being created by a miracle. Scientists believe this miracle was actually the island being forced out of the sea by the violence of the volcano's eruption.

The presence of the volcano and its continued activity of the previous millennium and more may also have caused the downfall of several previous civilizations that are thought to have lived on the island. Archaeologists have unearthed evidence of civilizations dating back as far as 1300 BC. It is thought that several civilizations may have fallen foul of the volcano's activity and been decimated only to be replaced with a new civilization as the geopolitical situation constantly evolved through the region.

The fact that the volcano is still active has not acted as a deterrent to either tourists or the proprietors of Santorini hotels however as the Santorini hotels selection is still constantly on the rise. In fact there have been twelve major eruptions documented and the one that took place in the Bronze Age is regarded as one of the seven most powerful eruptions in the known history of the world.

The effect of this cataclysmic volcanic activity has provided stunning locations for Santorini hotels allowing them to be built atop towering cliffs and next to sandy beaches. The variety of Santorini hotels design also reflects the unique geological nature of the island with extensive cliff side terraces and sunset facing balconies.

Most of Santorini Luxury Hotels are built in levels, on the cliffs of the villages, 300 meters high from the sea, offering magnificent views to the caldera and the Aegean sea. Enough of these hotels are considered as some of the best luxury hotels in the world. They feature high class facilities and amenities to their guests and deluxe accommodation in suites or apartments with a private balcony and stunning views of the sea and the famous unique Santorini sunset. These hotels are spread all over the island, but the most of them are situated in Fira (the capital of Santorini), in Oia, Imerovigli, Akrotiri and on the beaches of Kamari and Perissa.

The Caldera of Santorini and Akrotiri Excavations Site

The eruption of the Volcano in Santorini (in 1500 BC) created the "Caldera" which is actually the submerged basin in the middle of the Island and created also the high cliffs where most of the Santorini Luxury Hotels are built. When in Santorini, it's worth a visit to the Akrotiri Excavations Site which re-opened for the public (since April, 2012). This ancient settlement had been covered by volcanic ash and lava by the Santorini volcano eruption, one of the largest volcanic events in history.
