Things to do in Langkawi for Tourists
Must do activities in Langkawi
Langkawi is a chain of islands near Malaysia and it is considered one of the top tourist destinations in Malaysia. It is also one of the largest Geo parks in Asia and a popular destination for adventure and nature lovers. Tourism is its main source of income and although it's a small island there are plenty of beautiful places to visit and many activities to keep the tourists interested.
Popular activities include snorkeling, island hopping tour, visiting the seven wells waterfall and taking a ride in the Langkawi cable car. One reason these are popular is because these are the things you can do in Langkawi with children.
For nature lovers there are mangrove tours using a kayak which is an absolutely amazing experience. Trekking around the national parks is another option.
For adventure lovers looking for a unique experience there is sky trekking, where you go from tree to tree on cables. Plus there are many diving spots around the island to get explore nature in an adventurous way. I will briefly cover all the important tourist attractions in Langkawi in this article.
Langkawi Travel Map with List of Tourist Attractions
A lonely planet guide covering Malaysia and Singapore. Our trip included visits to Kuala Lampur, Penang, Langkawi and Singapore so this came in very handy. It cover everything from tourist attractions, best places to stay, tourist traps to avoid and much more.
Langkawi Cable Car plus the world famous "Hanging Bridge of Langkawi"
Probably the most famous tourist attraction in Langkawi. This is the perfect place to visit after doing some tiring activities like kayaking and sky trekking. We went to this after kayaking and it was the perfect place to wind down the day.
If you're into landscape photography you couldn't ask for a better place. It has some amazing views of the surrounding area. You can have the beach, mountains, waterfall or the famous Langkawi hanging bridge as your background.
When you are going up the cable car you can see the beach, small islands surrounding Langkawi, the rain forest below and some spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. There are other activities for you to enjoy in the base station. You can see deer at the deer farm, feed carrot to rabbits in the rabbit farm, buy some great stuff from the souvenir shop, enjoy some snacks or ice cream from the nearby shops etc.
There are two platforms at the top, it will take about 15 minutes to reach the first platform from the starting point. The ride itself is exciting and you can see the beach, surrounding islands and the most famous waterfall in Langkawi, Telaga Tujuh waterfall ( Seven wells Waterfall ).
We spent some time in the middle station enjoying the views and taking pictures. There are binoculars with powerful lens attached so you can get a closer look at the surroundings. There are some fun things to do in middle stations as well.
Then you have to take the cable car again to reach the last station. The last station in around 700M tall and you can see a much wider area of the sea and the nearby islands.
At the top station you can reach another mountain top using the curve hanging bridge. Its a thrilling experience to walk on it, especially when you can see below through the gaps in the platform. If you want to take a picture to remember Langkawi this is the place to take it. Think of a picture with you in the middle with two mountains and sea for the background. That is exactly what you can get in the hanging bridge.
The whole ride is 30RM ( ~10$) and it is totally worth the price in my opinion. No visit to Langkawi is complete without visiting here so I highly recommend you visit there.
Mangrove Kayaking in Langkawi
A tour around mangroves, fish farms and bat caves
Although we did few activities while in Langkawi, mangrove kayaking is the one I enjoyed the most. The whole activity will take around 6-7 hours and it includes the following
- transport from your hotel the starting point
- boat ride to the famous floating restaurant "Hole in the Wall"
- small tour of a fish farm where you can feed fish and sting rays
- tour through mangroves using a Kayak ( the exiting part )
- a delicious seafood lunch
- tour inside a bat cave
- transport back to the hotel
Now don't worry if you've never gone in a kayak. It was the first time for me too and it wasn't that hard to get used to it. Before going on the actual mangrove tour you'll be given instruction on how to maneuver the kayak and you'll have around 30 minutes to get used to it.
Then the mangrove tour starts. The surrounding area is very beautiful and you will hardly feel tired during the 3-4 hour kayaking tour. It rained during the tour which made it lot more exiting and less tiring. There were 12 of us and our guide was very patient waiting till everyone reaches certain points and helping out whenever someone had trouble navigating through tricky spots.
After the mangrove tour you will be served lunch in the "Hole in the wall" restaurant and then you will be taken on a fish farm tour. Here you can feed some fish and sting rays. Feeding fish rays is a unique experience, although safe it can be a bit unnerving. Finally you will be taken on a tour inside the bat cave where you can see limestone etc.
The tour is very educational as well, the guide will give you lots of information about the surroundings, so you will learn a lot about mangroves, different kind of mangroves, importance of mangroves and bats and a whole lot of other things. Although it involves kayaking you don't have to be super fit try this out and if you are visiting Langkawi this is definitely something you should try out.
Depending on who you choose the price could be around 180RM to 300RM, roughly that is around 65$ to 110$. Considering all the things you can experience to me it is well worth the price.
Learning kayaking, it only takes 15 minutes
Snorkeling and diving
A very popular activity among tourists and one of the activities children enjoy the most. Although some resorts run there own diving and snorkeling services the most popular one among tourists is the snorkeling tour in Palau Payar marine park. The calm and shallow waters there are ideal for snorkeling and the area has plenty of beautiful corals and marine life. You can even swim with baby sharks, one activity that is sure to excite children. During a typical tour you get the chance to relax by the beach or swim in the sea as well. Most of the time the tours can be modified according to your needs. A tour will normally cost around 300-400RM ( 95-130$) and include transport from the hotel to the jetty, ferry ride to the marine park, snorkeling tour including equipment, lunch and some more beach activities.
Langkawi Island hopping tour
Another popular activity among tourists and a great way to explore the various islands as well. The activities and the duration of the tour depends on your preference, time etc. In a typical tour you get eagle feeding, visit to the pregnant maiden lake and a visit to a nearby private beach where you can do some sea bathing and sunbathing. You can customize the tour to include a tour around mangroves and a visit to the bat cave which are well worth a visit. Island hopping tours are a great way to explore the many attractions of the island in leisurely way. There are plenty of beautiful sights when you go through the islands which have mountains covered in forest. Also you can see some of the oldest rock formations in the world as well. A great activity to do in Langkawi.

Sky trekking / Air trekking
Langkawi canopy adventures
Officially known as the Langkawi canopy adventures, this is a unique new way to explore the forest. Instead of going on foot you will be going from tree to tree with the aid of cables. This company has won the best adventure tour operator in Malaysia award and they have a pretty good safety record as well. The whole activity will take around 3-4 hours depending on the size of the group, fitness level of the group etc. There were 12 of us so it took us close to four hours. You will be given all the necessary equipment like ropes, gloves, helmets and safety gear. Make sure to wear shoes with a good grip since you will be walking on cables. The tour consists of following activities and the great thing is if you are not comfortable doing any of the activities you can skip some of the activities.
- Walking on a steel cable
- Climbing a spider web
- Walking on a two cables with a mix of activities
- Climbing a tree
- Flying Fox
- Abseiling / Rappelling on a rock slope
- Walking on a rock slope
- Abseiling / Rappelling on a rock slope
A lot of safety instructions are given and there were three guides with us, nothing is dangerous as long as you do what you are told. It does require some effort but you don't have to be super fit to participate in this activity. The cost is around 160RM( ~ 50$) to 180RM( ~60$) per person, larger the group lesser the price per person. Second best activity in Langkawi for me especially because of the unique experience.
The beginning, walking on a steel cable - Relatively easy activity to get things started
Shopping in Langkawi duty free shops
duty free heaven with lots of great items
Langkawi is a duty free island and one of the best places to go shopping in Malaysia. You can buy branded items for a very low price and there are many other things you can buy very cheaply.Chocolate, Liquor, Cigarettes and perfume are very cheap and there are whole shops dedicated to these specific items. We were looking to buy some chocolates to bring home and were amazed by the prices and the offers available. There were many buy two one free offers and since there were twelve of us we were able to make best use of these offers. It is also a great place to buy traditional Malaysian crafts and beautiful ornaments. Batik items, ornaments made out of wood and sea shells are plentiful and very cheap. Definitely one of the best places to go shopping in Malaysia.
Visiting waterfalls in Langkawi
There are few famous waterfalls in Langkawi island, most famous of them all being the seven wells waterfall. This is very close to the Langkawi cable car so it is one of the most visited waterfalls as well. As the name suggests the Seven wells waterfall is created as seven pools in different levels. You can go swimming in them or enjoy a picnic near them. There is a bit of a steep climb if you intent to reach the pool at the very top. It is an enjoyable since you are going through the forest but it is a bit tiring.
Another waterfall is the Durian perangin waterfall, If you are going on sky trekking then you can visit this waterfall on the way. As with seven wells this also comes down in different levels and there is a bit of a climb if you want to reach the top.The fresh water here is also ideal for swimming although there wasn't much water when we visited. There are designated places for you to enjoy a barbecue and have some fun.
There are many similar waterfalls in Langkawi and when it comes to beauty and the easiness of reach Seven wells is the best one to visit.
