Updated on October 31, 2014

Which Are The World's Most Dangerous Airlines?

Whilst many people recite the quote that flying is the safest form of travel, what they don't tell you is that flying with some airlines is actually much safer than flying with others. Next time you are booking a flight make sure you are picking one of the World's safest airlines.

Below are the Top 10 most dangerous airlines as ranked by a survey done by Australian magazine Askmen. Also I disclose the world's safest airline.

Information is taken from Askmen.com, news.com.au and Wikipedia.

All 290 people on board were killed. Without that incident Iran Air would not place so highly on this list.

The figures below include only international carriers not domestic only airlines. They also do not include airlines that have been banned from most international destinations such as many airlines from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kyrgyzstan.

It should also be noted that the timing of accidents is not taken into account. Some airlines have recently dramatically improved their safety records.

Those stats are low even for the worst airlines. I don't think I'll fly with them anyway. This lens has been blessed by a Squid Angel.

I did not expect Thai to be there...the others I do...PAL is mostly terrorist acts...but Thai is our best option out of Phnom Penh...part of Star Alliance, too. Sometimes, you can't just avoid some of these airlines especially the national carriers.

Thankfully I have never flown any of these airlines and I've flown quite a bit. Actually, to tell you the truth, I'm more nervous about the TSA (had a horrible experience with them once) than I am about flying.

Awesome list. It's a bit staggering when you think of it huh? We scroll through a list showing thousands of deaths without a second thought. It definitely gives cause to take a moment to be thankful for safety.

I like Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific ... and Continental Air-Micronesia. Many years ago, I liked TWA and Pan American. Sad to see them go. I briefly worked for Trans-Micronesian Airways out of Guam International Airport. My daughter now works as an operations manager for a flight-training school--I feel better about flying after seeing the training these folks get. Nice lens. I've liked, favorited, thumbs-upped, and lensrolled your masterpiece. Congrats on a great job!

I don't agree with this list. Factors such as Terror and weather can't be blamed on the carrier and in this list, you did. You can't blame iran air in 2008 for getting shot down on a clivilan flight by the united states

      mom-247 5 years ago

@airplaneshockey: True, there are factors included that are outside the control of the airline, but I'm not in a position to judge what those factors might be and how great their influence so I had to pick a basis on which to compile. If I for instance excluded weather how would I judge which events were directly caused by weather and which weren't. How would I know whether all airlines would have crashed in those weather conditions of only the one which did?

Wow - I would have thought that Aeroflot would b in this list, but after researching their safety record, they seem to be a pretty safe airline nowadays. I'm also surprised about the bad rating for Thai Airways, I've flown with them and they made an excellent impression on me. But I guess as a passenger, I wasn't in a position to really judge safety...

@HypnoBob LM: I agree, Thai seemed ok to me too. I suppose safety isn't based on how nice the seats are though, although you'd think that the internal maintenance would be a guide to general maintenance and age of the plane.

Very poor research and full of bias about this post, Thai airways had 2 fatal accidents not 4 as posted. UA and Air France also had fatal accidents why didn't you say something. Beside Qantas never had fatal accident but running through the runway end and crashed many times.

I actually disagree with some of the airlines being placed on the list. Philippine Airline for one is incredibly safe. I don't get why United or even American Airlines managed not to be on this list? Korean Air had such a dismal safety record before but they did improve? How about including Air France? Haven't they had a string of accidents in the last few years?

I don't know what your basis is at ranking these "dangerous" airlines but it would be best if you would at least place that these are just your opinions and not gospel truth

I never use commercial airlines but always travel on the family Learjet. So far we've had two serious accidents; a couple of years ago the pilot spilled his Martini on take-off and more recently we had the whole cabin re-trimmed in faux-ocelot, which was disastrous.

    • profile image

      anonymous 4 years ago

I wonder why Kenya airways is ranked number 5 and the two accidents that occurred were due to technical problems beyond the control of the pilots. The two ill-fated planes originated from Ivory Coast. There are a lot of unanswered questions about the two accidents. Where is Air Newzealand which crashed in Mount Everest in 1979 killing all the 279 people on board?

Ooohwee, I am still alive I must of flown China Airlines around 6 or so times back and forth from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Korean Air used to also have a bad reputation in the 90's. The problem was with the social hierarchy and employees always deferring to their superiors - the pilot.
