The Top 5 Places I Want to Visit Some Day

I would love to go on an exotic vacation in the near future. However, that doesn't seem too likely, so via my writing, I will take you with me on a journey to the most exotic, unique, luxury vacations I was able to find. Don't get me wrong...good ol' Wisconsin has plenty of interesting sites to see and things to do, but if I had the choice and money was not an obstacle, I would be traveling the world!

I have compiled a sort of bucket list, if you will, of exceptional luxury vacation destinations that I would love to take...if only I won the lottery or blew my life savings... There are some fantastic destinations in the world that I dream of visiting one day...and a girl can dream, right?!

Below, I will take you on a trip to Fiji, Finland, Bora Bora, Scotland, and Greece. We will visit some of the most beautiful (and maybe even strange) luxury vacation spots. Continue reading and come along for the ride!

Katafanga Island, Fiji - Poseidon Undersea Resort

Poseidon Undersea Resort in Fiji

The Poseidon Undersea Resort in Fiji is, hands down, THE MOST unique resort I have ever heard of. This destination is the world's first seafloor resort , located on an island off of Fiji, in a 5,000 acre Fijan Lagoon. What makes the Poseidon Undersea Resort even more interesting is that the island the resort is located on is referred to as "Poseidon Mystery Island" on the official website. Through research, I discovered that it is very likely this underwater haven is located on Katafanga Island, but I honestly have not found a source that confirms or denies that.

Currently, the Poseidon Undersea Resort offers a week long vacation package that includes a 2 night underwater stay and 4 nights spent in the waterfront hotel and over-water bungalows. The resort is set up similar to an All Inclusive resort, where food, drinks, and activities are included in the price.

This resort is the definition of luxury. For the underwater stay, guests are transported 40 feet under the sea, by elevator, to their suites, "with all the comforts one would expect from a top rated hotel." Each underwater suite is made of 70% 4 inch thick, clear acrylic, allowing guests to view the gorgeous coral gardens and ocean life. Now...this is the BEST part..each suite is equipped with a button that releases fish food, so nearby fish will gladly come and pay your suite a visit. Also, at night, underwater lights can be turned on to attract sea life from deeper areas of the reef.

Some Activities the Poseidon Undersea Resort has to Offer:

  • Learn to pilot a 3 person Triton submarine and explore the beautiful 5,000 acre lagoon.
  • Take a deep reef excursion while sipping cocktails aboard a 16 person, luxury submarine.
  • Walk on the lagoon floor wearing a hi-tech diving helmet, with surface supplied air.
  • Get dropped off at the resort's remote Honeymoon Island with a picnic lunch for some privacy. The hotel's staff will pick you up after you've had a chance to explore.
  • Also enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, spelunking, para-sailing, and so much more.

Where is Katafanga Island, Fiji?

Fiji is an island, approximately 1,300 miles northeast of New Zealand's North Island, in the South Pacific Ocean. Katafanga Island is located to the northeast of Fiji, about an hour long plane ride away from the airport in Suva, Fiji.

Saariselkä, Finland - Kakslauttanen Hotel and Igloo Village

Glass Igloos at Kakslauttanen Hotel and Igloo Village in Finland

The Kakslauttanen Hotel and Igloo Village in Finland is definitely on my list of places to visit. This destination is SO UNIQUE! The Kakslauttanen Hotel and Igloo Village boasts a variety of accommodations, including 40 first class log cabins, 5 of which are queen suites, a honeymoon turf chamber, glass igloos, and snow igloos. My personal choice would be two nights a glass igloo and 4 nights in a queen suite log cabin.

You may be thinking, "why in the world would anyone want to stay in a glass igloo?" In Finland, the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) are usually visible from late August to early April. The glass igloos present a gorgeous, unhindered view of the starry night sky and Aurora Borealis. The structures are built from a special type of thermal glass that prevents the glass from fogging up and the special glass also heats the igloo, keeping the space at a comfortable temperature. Each glass igloo includes a bathroom and luxury bed.

The queen suite log cabins look pretty dreamy to me as well. Each cabin boasts a kitchenette, luxurious bathroom, private sauna, and private outdoor hot tub. Also, the cabins are spaced far enough apart to give guests their privacy. Can you imagine gazing up at the Aurora Borealis with your loved one from a private hot tub? **sigh**

Some Summer Activities the Kakslauttanen Hotel and Igloo Village has to Offer:

  • Hiking and mountain biking excursions. The Saariselka area has more than 150 miles of marked trails through Finland's beautiful scenery.
  • Mushroom and berry picking. Explore the Finnish forests, which are full of mushrooms and berries just waiting to be picked.
  • Survival Training. Learn how to make a fire, even if the wood is wet, how to identify food and water in the wilderness, how to set up a temporary camp in the forest, and how to use the most common survival equipment.
  • Motocross and Scooter Safaris. Experience Finland's gorgeous wilderness on a dirt bike or ATV on a guided safari.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia - Le Meridien Hotel

Le Meridien Bungalows in Bora Bora

I would absolutely LOVE to visit Le Meridien in Bora Bora and stay in one of the Premium Overwater Bungalows. Le Meridien is located on a gorgeous blue lagoon and just as the name implies, the Overwater Bungalows are situated over the turquoise waters of the ocean.

My favorite feature of the bungalow is the floor of the living room. There is a large square of clear glass in the floor that allows you to enjoy the ambiance of the beautiful lagoon and watch the sea creatures below. Other amazing features include a private terrace overlooking the ocean, a set of stairs leading down to the water, and a bathtub in front of a huge panoramic window with a view of Mount Otemanu. Sounds like paradise to me!

This resort also offers different styles of accommodations to fit everyone's tastes. For those who enjoy the beach, the Beach Bungalow would be the best fit; just walk out the front door and you are standing on the white, sandy beach of the inner lagoon, right on the ocean. Pool Beach Villas are also available, featuring a private plunge pool on a secluded terrace.

Some Activities Le Meridien has to Offer:

  • Visit the Infinity Swimming Pool and swim among the curious fish and turtles.
  • Take a guided excursion to swim with the sharks and sting rays.
  • Tour the Bora Bora Turtle Center at the heart of the resort to meet and view the turtles in their natural environment.
  • Learn how to sail a pirogue around the lagoon. (A traditional Polynesian flat bottomed boat).

Take a peak at the Beautiful Le Meridien

Inverness, Scotland - Aldourie Castle

Aldourie Castle in Inverness, Scotland

I know this is a bit "princessy" of me, but I definitely want to stay at Aldourie Castle in Scotland at some point in my lifetime. Another reason that I feel that I MUST visit Aldourie Castle is because I am completely enamored by the Scottish Highlands due to my favorite series of books, The Outlander Series, by Diana Gabaldon, which takes place near Inverness.

Aldourie Castle has occupied the shores of Loch Ness for hundreds of years. The castle has been completely restored, "to create a luxurious, yet intimate home, in which the attention to heritage and period detail is matched by the quality and comfort of the furnishings." (Quoted from Aldourie Castle's Brochure) Although the structure's historic décor may transport you back in time, the castle is equipped with modern conveniences and amenities, so no worries, you won't have to do your business in the "privy."

This historic castle boasts 15 bedrooms, each unique in its own décor and personality. Some of the bedroom décor is based upon previous owners of the castle, some are decorated based on a period style, and others have been inspired by the castle's beautiful architecture. The luxurious and grand décor is just one element of the many that makes Aldourie Castle a desirable place to visit.

The grounds of Aldourie Castle are equally as beautiful as the interior, providing breathtaking views of Loch Ness, an infamous body of water known for the legendary Loch Ness Monster. The gardens and woodlands have also been restored to their beautiful "19th Century splendor." There are numerous walkways and paths for guests to explore the grounds, woodlands, and gardens...sounds like a dream come true!

Some Activities the Loch Ness Area Has to Offer:

  • Spend a day fishing for salmon, trout, sea-trout, char or pike on scenic Loch Ness.
  • Take a cruise on Loch Ness to view the gorgeous backdrop of the Highlands and visit historic Urquhart Castle.
  • Tour a local whiskey distillery. The Scottish Highlands are famous for their world renowned malt whiskys.
  • Visit the Loch Ness Visitor Centre and Exhibition to learn more about about this famous loch and the legendary Loch Ness monster.

Santorini, Greece - Villa Katikies

Villa Katikies in Santorini, Greece

I will have to admit, all that I know of Greece is what I have seen on TV. But what I have seen of the Greek culture and landscape has always fascinated me. Start off your vacation by boarding a ferry and enjoying a scenic 8-9 hour ride from Greek's mainland to the island of Santorini, which often stops at the islands of Paros, Naxos and Ios, along the way.

Villa Katikies is built on a 300 foot caldera cliff, overlooking the stunning Aegean Sea, on the island of Santorini. There are only 7 villas on the premises, which offers the hotel staff much more time to customize your stay as well as privacy that you won't find on more populated resorts.

The villas are whitewashed, inside and out, in the traditional Greek style, creating a sense of beauty and simplicity. The simplicity of the whitewashed walls combined with the luxury of the hand picked furniture and décor, creates a unique and comfortable environment for guests. Each villa offers its own private veranda, giving guests a view of the caldera and the Aegean sea's "azure waters." Also, there is a Jacuzzi, swimming pool, and sun deck on the room of Villa Katikies, again, offering up that magical view.

Image Appears Courtesy of Creative Commons: Santorini Greece

Some Activities the Island of Santorini has to Offer:

  • Take a trip to the eastern side of the island and visit the vast array of beaches, ranging from black sand, red sand, and pebbled.
  • Visit Santorini's archaeological sites of ancient structures, which were preserved in volcanic ash and rumored to be the remnants of Atlantis.
  • Tour the Sigalas Winery, located on the beach, and taste the locally made wines.
  • Explore the restaurants, shops, and nightlife in the nearby villages and experience some of the Greek culture.

An Introduction to Villa Katikies

Where is Santorini, Greece?

Santorini is an island located in the southern Aegean Sea, approximately 120 miles southeast of Greece's mainland. This secluded island is the southernmost member in Greece's group of Cyclades islands.

Last summer, my girlfriends and I went on the most relaxing vacation in the Florida Keys. We found an incredible rental in the awesome Ocean Reef Community in Key Largo. Elaine knew Bob from Swenson & Ecuyer Realty and he found us this perfect condo right on the breathtaking Marina. Bob and his team provided excellent concierge service, that catered to our every needs. We did everything... scuba diving, tennis, sailing, golfing, etc.. The experience was amazing! @atomicgirl24: There are stories about Poseidon Undersea Resort on CNN and other news and travel sites. I did my research to the best of my ability, as there are no sources that claims this destination is a hoax that I saw. I do truly believe that this place does exist, and hey, if it doesn't, oh well, it's still a fun vacation idea.

    • profile image

@kmyangel: It don't think it exists, that it was just a concept that never got built. The dead giveaway is that when you try to search for pictures on the web, all you get are virtual tours and CGI concept art. Even the official website has no pictures.

    • profile image

The Poseidon Undersea Resort does not seem to exist. All there are on the web are either CGI virtual tours or CGI concept art, but no actual photographs. The official site also has no actual photos of the place, so I don't think it was ever constructed. Either that, or it may have been an elaborate hoax.
