Lake Rotoiti in More Detail
Lake Rotoiti is situated in the Nelson Lakes National Park which is near the top of the South Island of New Zealand, about an hours drive away from Nelson and Blenheim.
The lake looks like a horseshoe with a tail and is nestled amongst mountain ranges opening up opportunities tor skiers and trampers.
People enjoy a wide range of activities including swimming, boating, fishing, walking, tramping, skiing and just admiring the wonderful surroundings.
There is a variety of accommodation available to suit a wide range of budgets and interests. There include two camping grounds situated at lake level, holiday houses, Alpine Lodge, Bed and Breakfasts, Homestay, chalets, backpackers.
Your family could hire a holiday house for their required time and enjoy the amazing opportunities Lake Rotoiti has to offer.
Let's take a look at what your family could get up to.
The lake is
full of people
of various types
Life Jackets For The Whole Family - A must for any boating enthusiast
For Mum and Dad
At one end of Kerr Bay there is an area where you can hire canoes for 30 minutes slots or longer at reasonable prices.
The whole family can enjoy playing around on the water and if they haven't canoed before Lake Rotoiti isa great place to learn.
Canoes Galore - Just in case the family want to bring their own.
If your family is lucky enough to hire
a bach with a rowboat then this
gives a great alternative to canoeing.
Rowing can be done any time as
And is suitable for all the family.
There is a Water Taxi Service which takes people up to the head of the lake to have a look around.
It is commonly used for trampers who begin or end their tramps there.
This would give the keen walkers of your family to enjoy a boat ride and a walk at the same time.

If your family have your own motorboat
you could always bring this up on your
trailer and enjoy biscuiting, water skiing,
fishing, picnicking and exploring various
areas of the lake.
The boat can be launched at one of three jetty's.
Two are in Kerr Bay and one is in West Bay.

Water Skiing at Lake Rotoiti
Mmmmmm......Freshly Caught Trout
If you go fishing at Lake Rotoiti you need a fishing license obtained from the Information Centre.
The keen swimmers of your family can enjoy plenty of swimming fun.
There is a raft you can swim out to and jump or dive off. And marker bouys you can swim around as a guide. Or you can do your own thing.
If your family enjoy swimming then you may own snorkels, masks, lilos as desired by the various family members.
The beach is a stone beach and lots of fun can be had by throwing stones in the lake in such a way that they bounce in and out of the water many times.
The aim is to find a flat stone and use a strong wrist motion on the throw so that the stone doesn't immediately sink to the bottom. If you have teenage children then I am guessing that they could be quite good at this.
Make sure you do it away from people and ducks in the water.

Feeding The Ducks
This activity is great for the younger members of your family to do and help clear out the stale bread from the house!!
You will often find that you will make instant friends with swans and seagulls as well!!
Suntan Lotion - For Healthy Sun Protection
Your Family will need to remember to apply lots of suntan lotion for all their outdoor summer adventures.

There is a small play area
for the youngsters,
big and small, to enjoy.
This one is situated down
at Kerr Bay which is
one of the bays in the
horseshoe part of the lake.
It consists of a slide area,
as seen in the photo
and a couple of swings
next door to the right.
There is trampoline
by the Alpine Lodge,
opposite the main shop
and off the main road.
There are rocks near
the Kerr Bay playground
which the children
can have fun with.
There are fabulous short walks around the area ranging from about fifteen minutes upwards.
The paths are well graded and it is great opportunity to look at the native vegetation and enjoy the native birds singing like the Bellbird and Tui.
You just take it at your own pace. So Mr and Mrs can walk slowly with her youngsters and the teenagers could take on a faster speed.
Some people have been known to run these fabulous tracks to keep up their fitness levels.
There had been a storm prior to this photo being taken, causing some branches to cover this track leading up Black Hill.
Rock and Vegetation - Black Hill
A boat ride or a lakeside
walk can take you to a
jetty on the tail segment
of the lake.
From there you can walk
up the hill in the bush
for about 10 minutes
and see a waterfall
called Whisky Falls.
Walking Shoes For The Whole Family - Your Family will need these for any Outdoor Explorations
If your family are keen trampers then you could go further afield.
There are many huts which you can stay at overnight. As mentioned before, you can take a water taxi to the head of the lake ( or you can walk ) and tramp up the valley to a variety of different huts.
Or you can drive to the carpark of Mount Robert and start a variety of different tramps from there.

~ you can turn left slightly further up at the little ridge above the hut and walk across the top and down the other side.
~ Or you can carry up to the higher ridge, turn right and tramp along it to Lake Angelus and more.

There are other tramps in the Nelson Lakes National Park and surrounding areas.
Your family can get information on all of this at the Information Centre. And if they are keen, this is where they register their intentions and pay a fee for the hut use.
Enjoying The Holiday House
Your family can just chill at the holiday house. You can bring entertainment from home , like musical instruments if you play, DVDs, CDs, crafts, painting or whatever they are into. Or enjoy what the house has to offer.
Games and Jigsaws
Many holiday houses have a range of games and jigsaw puzzles to do. The whole family can enjoy a game of yahtzee, boggle, pictionary, game of life or any card game of their choice like happy family's. Or small groups of 2 or more can enjoy games like mastermind and battleships.
After tea is a great chance to enjoy family games . Or on those rainy, windy days where you just want to enjoy being inside.
Someone in the family may enjoy relaxing with a jigsaw, such as the WASGIJ seen in the photo.
Playing games or doing jigsaw puzzles are great holiday fun. It could be something your family doesn't do during year as part of their usual daily routine.

Other Indoor Fun
Relaxing With Television
Find out if the bach you are hiring has a DVD player . Bring DVD's up to suit the whole family. And enjoy.
If you are into reading, there is no better place than on a comfy chair or sofa at the hired holiday house at Lake Rotoiti.
Crafts, Drawing and Painting
These activities can be brought from home if any family member is into them. There can be plenty of time for relaxing in this way.
Cooking may be a great way to relax. Maybe one of the kid's is a closet chef. Holiday time gives one plenty of time to have fun in the kitchen.
It may be nice to buy a meal instead of cooking. You can buy fish and chips at the main shop on most summer nights. And then there is the cafe and Alpine Lodge across the road for two alternatives of differing price range.
Indoor Entertainment Products
With all the activities mentioned and
beautiful surroundings there is plenty
of scope for some amazing photography.
You can go wild.
