Swimming & Canoeing at Wekiwa Springs State Park

Updated on September 29, 2014

Enjoy A Fun Day Swimming, Canoeing or Hiking At Wekiwa Springs

When I first moved to Orlando I couldn't wait to see what the area had to offer a nature lover like me. I knew Orlando was the home of the theme parks and I couldn't wait to explore them. But I like to get away from the crowds too. I asked a few people from, church, work and my neighborhood for a recommendation where to go. The one park that was mentioned repeatedly was Wekiwa Springs State Park. Our family has enjoyed many fun filled days here since then. We spend a lot of afternoons floating on a tubes or canoeing there.

Taking a Hike on the Nature Trail

I couldn't wait to spend a day with my family hiking and enjoying Florida's natural beauty. Wekiwa has hiking trails that vary in length from 1/8th of a mile to 13.5 miles. The portion of the trail we chose to walk on was mostly flat and clearly marked which was great as we were hiking with a 3 & 4 year old. It is a boardwalk that meets ADA standards. We saw plenty of wildlife. The kids were delighted as we spotted deer, raccoon, opossum and squirrel. We had one squirrel that followed us down the boardwalk even coming straight up to us begging for food! To my son's delight he saw a large turtle, a baby alligator, and some frogs and lizards. There were also plenty of species of birds for those of you who love bird watching.

Canoeing Wekiwa Springs

We love canoeing and the 17 mile long Wekiwa Springs was one of the best times I have had in the park. The serene untouched beauty of the surroundings was very beautiful. There was wildlife all around and the kids enjoyed seeing the turtles and fish in the water. The canoe trips vary from a short 1 hour paddle tour to a full 8 hour day. Canoe and Kayak rentals are available at Nature Adventures located near the concession stand. Life jackets are provided if needed.

Swimming, Tubing and Snorkeling

On a hot Florida day there is nothing better than spending a day swimming in Wekiwa Springs 72 degree water. The springs are located at the bottom of a grassy hillside that is perfect for sunbathing and picnics. The spring is walled and the bottom is sandy and about 5 foot in depth. The springs gets very crowded on hot days so keep an extra close eye on children and non swimmers because there is no lifeguard on duty! They also have a hydraulically powered swim lift to help visitors who need assistance getting in and out of the water.

Pets are allowed but when we brought our dog there were so many places that she wasn't allowed to go that it is better to leave your pet at home.

Geocaching is a new trend that many hikers now enjoy doing. Geocaching takes you to areas of the park you might not otherwise see. It works like a scavenger hunt where you seek treasure or clues to other areas of the park.

Using your GPS device you input the coordinates then find the geocache (container).

Wekiwa Springs State Park Nature Adventures is located in Wekiwa Springs and rents canoes and kayaks. Horseback rides are available too.
