Time to Visit - West Edmonton Mall!

Updated on February 19, 2012

The wonder and the fun!

I remember the first time I went inside the West Edmonton Mall; I was overjoyed because I actually had the opportunity to grace the doors with my presence - something I thought would never happen in my lifetime.

I proceeded into the mall - seeing a few stores along the way - and then I took another step and it seemed the world opened up before me. It was only then that I realized it would take me more than a few hours to see the whole place - which I didn't get to do that particular visit. However, I did take in a dolphin show (which has since been replaced by sea lions) and it was an enjoyable experience for sure.

Of course, I saw other attractions inside the mall - during my initial and subsequent visits. I will share some of my favorite moments with you and I hope you enjoy tagging along on my trip through memory lane.

The photo you see is not a personal photo. Instead I must give credit to Guinevere.

There is an assortment of rides at this location - many of them catering to small children - but there are rides suitable for teenagers and adults, as well. There is enough fun for the entire family.

There are also booths where games can be played. There is a food court located just outside of it and there are lockers to store your personal effects - or shopping bags you may have been carrying with you.

There is a play area to entertain toddlers, with ball pits and slides, not to mention tunnels. You can hear the voices of children echoing throughout the various structures. Coupled with the music playing over the speaker system, you'd feel like you were taking part in a party.

In this photo, even my newborn son - 2007 - was given a little tour.

Thank God Mommy is holding me; I'd get lost in all these balls!

Sea Life Caverns

West Edmonton Mall attraction

Sea life caverns is a place I have only been inside once; it is a miniature aquarium, showcasing about 200 species of marine life forms, but also has a few other displays, among which you can find reptiles.

You can find sharks and penguins here. I really enjoyed watching the penguins; it was the first time I've seen them and they really can be an active and entertaining bunch.

There is a guided interpretive tour but, for the most part, I just did my own thing - watching the sea lions frolic and play. I also took a few photos.

World Waterpark

West Edmonton Mall attraction

I love this place! Whenever my family and I visit Edmonton, the children and I visit this waterpark. We spend 4 - 5 hours enjoying various parts of the water park.

I enjoy riding tubes at the wave pool and will go on some of the slides, as long as they don't get my adrenaline pumping too much. I did go on the Thunderbolt one year and thought my brains would crash through my forehead; thankfully, they didn't...but my face froze throughout the few seconds it took for me to take the raft down the waterslide.

Mom recorded me on video and it wasn't until after I was rising from the pool that I realized she had recorded it on her own video camera instead of mine. I took the slide again - this time making sure she had my video camera in her hands. It wasn't as bad the second time around, though my brains and facial expression still froze; I just knew what to expect so it didn't feel as scary.

Want to hear something interesting? To this day, I never did watch that video.

I wanted to share that little story with you but, essentially, this is a water wonderland for little children. There are waterslides good enough for toddlers and are suitable for older children and adults who can't swim. Ask my mother; she loves the Little Caribbean - the waterslide which allows her to land in a mere 6 inches of water.

This photo was taken in 2008 when my son was almost a year old; he thoroughly enjoyed the waterpark, though he enjoyed having a hot dog at the concession stand almost as much.

Fantasyland Hotel

West Edmonton Mall accomodation

Each year my children and I are in Edmonton, we spend a night at the Fantasyland Hotel. We take in some of the attractions and, after my third visit to the mall, we began to shop a little as well - a novel experience. During prior visits, there was always so much to experience that we didn't have enough energy to shop.

Though we've spent a couple of nights in standard rooms with a whirlpool, we have also stayed in a couple of theme rooms. If memory serves me correctly, we first stayed in a Polynesian Theme Room, followed by a Western Theme Room a year later. We truly enjoyed ourselves and took lots of photos, while enjoying the whirlpools in each of these rooms.

Some attraction passes for two are included in the price of the room but you can also buy add-ons for additional members in your party/group. There is also a breakfast coupon which you can bring to Cafe Europa, located just upstairs.

This is a photo we took in the Polynesian Room as my youngest daughter and I posed for the camera. These pillars are located at the foot of the bed.

Professor WEM's Adventure Golf (Mini Golf)

West Edmonton Mall attraction

We've enjoyed the mini gulf on a couple of occasions.

The course is bright and colorful and has enough of a challenge to prevent parents from becoming bored too quickly.

The course is picturesque. I was tempted to take photos the entire time.

Center of Gravity Trampolines

Secure the straps in appropriate places, get raised to a comfortable height and begin to spin, flip or turn - whatever pleases you - as you bounce on the trampoline beneath your feet.

As gravity brings you down and the bounce lifts you high, you definitely should take advantage of experiencing this sensation while you have the opportunity to do it - safely, I may add.

Putt n' Glow

West Edmonton Mall attraction

This is a glow-in-the-dark 18-hold mini golf course.

Neon lights surround you and taking photos proves to be an interesting experience.

We enjoyed our time here and will definitely do it again.

This photo is a general photo which gives you an idea of what a glow-in-the-dark mini golf course looks like.

Various Attractions

at West Edmonton Mall

I've only touched on the few that I've actually experienced. However, there is a Deep Sea Adventure, an Ice Palace and other areas to provide enjoyment for various members of the family.

There are movie theaters, arcade games, a few food courts, an aqua massage machine, Antique Photo Shoppe and a host of stores and boutiques to catch your attention.

If you are in the Edmonton area, your visit will not be complete without spending a day enjoying some of the attractions West Edmonton Mall offers.

Official Link - featuring West Edmonton Mall

I've been to West Edmonton Mall on a few occasions. For one reason or another, though, we haven't taken part in all the attractions so I can't vouch for how enjoyable every activity is.

However, I have provided you with the official link so you can learn more about this fantastic mall and the host of attractions, stores and eateries available. I'll even introduce you to Fantasyland - the luxurious hotel located within West Edmonton Mall.

Please feel free to share your experiences while visiting West Edmonton Mall.

They were just building the mall when I lived in Edmonton so I never did get to experience the joys of West Edmonton Mall. It's another one of those things that I have to put on my to do list.

@PromptWriter: I've been at West Ed Mall a few times and the first three trips I made there, I didn't shop at all; I was busy taking in the attractions. However, we have visited some of the parks in Edmonton and intend to visit others as time goes on.

I am also a big nature person but the kids tend to take rpecendence, most times, when on vacation. :)

I've only been there once for a short visit just so we could say we went. My husband and I are not big shoppers when we are traveling, we are more into seeing natural places and being outdoors. I remember we picked up a few souvenirs and we were actually given a complimentary cloth bag because it was I first time there. The pirate ship and underground tank were cool.

Our kids had a blast at the Edmonton Mall about 10 years ago! The wave park and waterslides were definitely worth the trip! Fun lens!

They were just building West Edmonton Mall when I moved out of Edmonton, and unfortunately I have not been back to visit it, because it looks like a wonderful place to play. The mini golf looks like a blast ... thank you for doing such a great job on displaying it :)

My goodness! More of a theme park than a mall, I'd say. Looks like your family has tons of fun there!
