My Tips For Effective Haggling
Tip one - Do your Research
You need to decide how much you want to spend. Once you have set your budget you can target deals that offer the best value for that amount of money.
Research the product you want to buy. What do you need from this product? All products have their own features and there is no point in paying for extra features you will never use.
Look around and find the product you think will best suit you and your budget. Find out how much you can buy if for from different sources including online retailers. Finally give the store you want to buy from a chance to compete with their rivals.
Tip two - Build a rapport with the sales person
The first thing you should do when you meet a salesperson is smile and ask their first name. Now you can use it as often as possible in the conversation, give them your name too. This simple gesture can start to break down the barriers between a customer and sales person.
A good start would be some light hearted chat before talking business. Try to have fun if possible as this will help build rapport but don't forget why you are there, to get a great deal!
Tip three - Wait, don't haggle too soon
You don't want to be in to much of a hurry to do a deal, remember patience is a virtue. Rushing into a deal can be seen as a sign of weakness on your part and might result in you not getting offered the best possible deal. If you try to rush a deal you give them the upper hand, if they know you are patient they know you will happily go to another retailer.
Try not to mention price in the first five minutes, allow the sales person to settle into a conversation with you (you will also settle into a comfortable conversation with them this way).
Let the sales person tell you about the product you are looking to buy. You may already know about the product from the research you have done but it relaxes the sales person and it is polite to listen to the information you are being given and makes sense too.
Allow them to show you the stock they have on offer. Old stock might not have all the latest features and if you don't need those additions you could do a great deal that will suit you both.
Tip four - Stand your ground
Conversation gives you the opportunity to find out a little about the person you are dealing with. If their sales pitch is swift and slick don't let them get away with that. Stand your ground and keep asking questions, see how much they really know about what they are selling you.
Be sure that you are in control of the situation, its your money! Being rushed into parting with your money is bad news, buy in haste and repent at leisure. If you are feeling pressured just keep asking questions instead of handing over your cash.
Tip five - Lets talk numbers
Ok to start with I must stress this! Do not give away your maximum budget, this will automatically become their minimum budget! You do not want to spend you maximum budget, that is the whole point of haggling!
There are few things you should not say. Do not say "I don't suppose you can knock any money off?" also don't say "I don't suppose you could give me a discount?" You have left to much room for the answer "No, terribly sorry"
Here are a few things to say, "I like those... get the price down and I would buy them today" another good one would be "What sort of deal can you do that will persuade me to buy today?". These comments make it clear that they are going to have to make a good deal to get the sale.
Stay focused and positive. You should go in so low that it's almost insulting to get a good deal, your aim is for them to say "You must be joking, it costs us more then that!". With this you have established the floor price and can move up from there.
When you make an offer be patient and wait until the sales person replies before speaking again, keep the pressure on them, not on you to justifying that offer. The key moments of silence are crucial to making a great deal. Send out a subtle positive message when making your offer by nodding your head slightly as you do it.
Tip six - Have an escape plan
If you find the pressure is getting a bit too intense you must have an excuse to get out of the shop. You want your excuse to be something the sales person can't argue with. This will take the heat off if the pressure of haggling gets to be too much.

Tip seven - Extras
Go for extras as a part of any deal you do. Before you speak with the sales staff have a look around the shop for extras that you would like to get for free as a part of your deal.
Keep your wish list realistic, you are not likely to get expensive items for free but a few accessories are a good way to seal a deal. You want to go for these extras when you know that you cannot get the sales person to drop the price anymore. If you start a negotiation with a few freebies the seller will build that into the final price and thats not a free extra at all!
Tip eight - Clinching the deal
You will not be thrown out of a shop for asking for a discount if you do so in a friendly and courteous way. During the current credit crisis there are many deals out there to be done.
The more you haggle the better you will get at it. When you get a really good deal that sense of satisfaction will boost your confidence to get good deals in the future, its not just about the money you have saved!
Tip nine - Overcoming red tape
When it comes to any dispute remember the squeaky wheel get the grease. The people who get their complaints resolved are the ones who take things further and don't accept a fob-off. Be persistent and keep squeaking.
It pays to avoid confrontations, you need to keep a level head while you state your case. Know your rights before you try to get your dispute settled so that you can stand your ground in a controlled fashion.
Tip ten - Getting your money back
If you believe you are within your legal rights and are entitled to a refund persistence is the name of the game. Consumers are typically well protected regardless of how a purchase was made. This protection includes the right to get clear information about goods and services before purchase, a cooling off period and protection from credit card fraud.
When you are trying to get a refund start with the retailer who sold it to you and be courteous and polite as well as firm. Give the retailer the chance to sort things out and be patient.
