Best Beatles Songs

Updated on March 15, 2008

The Fab Four Known as The Beatles

Hot and Cold for the Beatles

I hope that I'm not drawn and quartered for this statement, but I'm not a huge fan of the Beatles. No doubt they had talent, no doubt they were one of the best bands ever, no doubt they produced many songs that were musical masterpieces.

So then, why don't I consider myself to be a huge Beatles fan? I guess it's because out of the songs by the Beatles that I dislike, I absolutely despise them. I have a physically violent reaction to some songs by the Beatles. On the other hand, there are some songs by the Beatles that are my all-time favorite songs. I have a true love-hate relationship with the Fab Four.

Pondering the Best Beatles Songs

I decided to try to come up with my number one favorite Beatles song. Guess what? I simply couldn't. There are so many beautiful Beatles ballads. But I have narrowed my favorite Beatles songs down to two. Here they are.

Beatles Rubber Soul Album

Favorite Beatles Song - In My Life

In My Life literally brings tears to my eyes, even decades after hearing it for the first time. This Beatles song expresses so well the feelings of love and loss. It is sentimental without being sappy or cheesy. In My Life also showcases the talents of all of the Beatles, not just the main singer.

It is rumored that In My Life was written after one of John Lennon's friends from childhood died. His name was Stuart Sutcliff, and he was originally in the Beatles band.

In My Life is a classic song that transcends time. I can see it being played at weddings, funerals, and graduations decades from now.

Eleanor Rigby Beatles Video

Best Beatles Song Runner-Up - Eleanor Rigby

My second choice for the Best Beatles song is Eleanor Rigby. This song is short because it says all it needs to in its powerful lyrics. The lyrics are so haunting and sad as they tell the story of Eleanor Rigby. It evoked imagery that I have never forgotten. Some of the best songwriting you will ever hear are contained in these powerful lyrics

An interesting bit of trivia about Eleanor Rigby is that it is the only rock song to use a string quartet as the only musical instrument accompaniment. Listen carefully. Eleanor Rigby doesn't even have drums.

Your Favorite Song by the Beatles?

Trying to decide on the best Beatles song was a tough decision, much more difficult than I thought it would be. Do you agree with my choices?

If not, what is your choice for favorite Beatles song? Try to narrow it down to no more than two, just to make it interesting. Let me know in the comments section below.

My favorite song is "Strawberry Fields forever" and "Here Comes the Sun."

With all the songs they have composed and performed, seems like they have that perfect song for each moment of my life :)

I've compiled my top ten over here:

I enjoy so many of their songs, Across the Universe, Let it Be, Blackbird, Help!, Hey Jude, Something and Ticket to Ride to name a few, but I would have to give the title of greatest ong ever recorded to Yesterday.

Nice hub Angela. I think your top two choices are very convincing. I also think Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields are just as good. As for the worst - how about Ob-La-Di-Ob-la-Da (truly obnoxious) or Revolution No.9 (25% of the White Album, it just seems longer!)

      Cheers, Jon Green (Music Hubber)

Wow this is a great Hub! I have been a Beatlemaniac since they first arrived here in the 60s. My favorite song is 'In My Life'. As far as I'm concerned, they're the BEST and always will be! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I was a huge fan of the Beatles, then I discovered the Kinks, whose sense of melody was just as good as the Beatles, but the lyrics were much more intelligent and mature. I would counter In My Life with Days as a song for funerals, graduations and just moving on.

In My Life & Eleanor Rigby are certainly brilliant songs but as a huge Beatles fan I do feel a bit like maybe someone who actually likes the band may do a better job with this one ;)

It's okay Angela, I know there are people in the world who don't share my special love for the boys. :)

Wow! Cool post! Caught my eye especially since last night, my daughter and I (who had been beggin me to see this) watched the movie “Across The Universe”. It was great! It had a ton of Beatles songs featured, and they were done slightly differently, but very well presented. If anyone has seen it or not, I give it two thumbs up. Cool graphics too.

To say which one is my favorite, arrrgg, I’m with Angela, no way I could say. To me, unlike any other band that has ever been, each one of their songs were individual works of art. Like walking through an art gallery, each one is so different and unique, almost as if each song was done by a different band! I’m more amazed at “HOW” did they come up with this stuff. The arrangements, the flows, totally captivating, what I would call “ear candy”. I sing and play in a classic rock type band. We’re considering “Paperback Writer”.

      Have a great day ALL

Shirley, I knew I would offend Beatles fans. But I did give them credit. I Saw Her Standing There is another song by the Beatles that I really like.

Uninvited Writer, I agree that Across the Universe is an awesome song. And This Boy is another favorite. It's hard to believe that I said I'm not a huge Beatles fan, right?

Yes, Uninvited Writer, Across the Universe is a beautiful song! NASA even broadcast it out into space.

My favourite song is Across the Universe. I consider it a perfect song.

I still like some of their earlier songs too. This Boy was a favourite from the time I was 7...

I just clicked on In My brought tears to my eyes too, and gave me goosebumps.

OMG!!! I've got an index finger in each ear, going "lalalalalala"....I can't hear this. Probably would work better if I shut my eyes.

I'm the (practically) oldest living Beatlemaniac....they did soooo many great songs! Help!, She Loves You, I've Just Seen A Face, I Saw Her Standing There....I love all those and many more.

I have to agree that there are a couple of songs that aren't my favourites - Long & Winding Road (too long), Hey Jude (like the first part, but the ending goes on too long), but other than that, how can I possibly pick one favourite from a band whose music can still give me goose bumps?

If I have to pick one, put me down for HELP! followed by I Saw Her Standing There as second runner up.

      This was painful.
