I am 40, single, and overweight.

According to magazines, sitcoms, cartoons, and every romantic comedy I should be miserable with a disturbing affection for cats and boxed wine.

Not a chance!

I am just as far from miserable as I am from perfection. I am not waiting for a man to save me or define me. I struggle with an unhealthy addiction to carbohydrates, especially the sweet ones, but I could never clear out a smorgasbord.

I am a girlie girl with a wicked sense of humor, I am optimistic about love and I am not a man-hater, I am self-assured and I would never refer to myself as a bitch, I am rational and true romance can still buckle my knees, I am honest - even when that honesty takes the opposing side, and I am a sucker for beautiful words, as long as they are backed up by real meaty actions.

So, what makes me think I have anything useful to share with the world?

For more than half my life I have had a profession that allowed me to engage in everything from the mundane to the jaw-dropping, while at the same time being trusted to make someone feel better about how they and the world sees them…it has been an honor.

Instinctively I have always known I should be paying attention to the people who enter my life. I listen to their words and notice their body language, and when someone gives me a piece of advice I remember it, not that I always use it. You don’t have to experience everything to learn lessons about life…you just have to pay attention and have empathy for the people who choose to share their lives with you.

There are far more people out in the world wiser than me, but I may know a thing or two about life, love, laughter, and the joy of being a woman.
