You may have determined from the name SavannahLady that I come from the beautiful city of Savannah, GA. I come from a relatively large family with 5 siblings, 3 bothers and 2 sisters. My parents who are now both deceased, were decendents of South Carolina. I attended and graduated from Savannah State University with a BS degree in Business Education in 1972. There I met my husband of 39 years. Pretty much I was a home body until then. I got married on a Saturday and moved to Houston, TX on Sunday, the very next day. From that point my "home body* status became null and void.
I lived in Houston Texas for about a year and a half (1973-1975) Then moved to Chicago IL. Chicago would prove to bare major milstones in my life. In Chicago my husband and I purchased our very first home. Which we would need because we also were expecting our first child. In moving to Chicago I transitioned from education to Corporate America. I accepted a position at a major pharmacutical company in the Corporate Personnel Department. My first son was born in 1979. We remained in Chicago for an additional two years, then an opportunity was presented to us that my family moved to Rochester, NY.
Moving to Rochester brought me back into the academic arena because I accepted a position at the University of Rochester as a Personnel Representative. This position was very high profile, in that I supervised the staff that administered all of the benefits for the university. At that time the university employed 9000 employees. So needless to say that it was very busy and my days were very long. But this only lasted about two years due to the fact I got pregnant with my second son. When he was born I decided to take a leave of absence due to the stress and long hours of the job. I needed to look for something that would fit into my role as a new mom. Taking that leave was a blessing in disguise.
I eventually resigned from the University and took a teaching position at a special program sponsored by the State University of New York. This would be another transition in that this position was not teaching kids but adults.
In taking this position in connected me to two astounding women who would have a significant affect in my life. As a new employee in adult based education they embraced me and became the mentors that I needed to make this transition a success. As we grew to be friends we discovered certain commonalities. We all shared the M in our first names and we all shared the love of music. We began singing together at programs sponsored by the school and gave ourselves the catchey name the 3Ms.
As my career progressed here, I decided that I wanted to go in a different direction and be an administrator in a college or university. So I enrolled in an accelerated course to work on a masters degree in Education Administration. But as I approached the end of that course another life changing decision faced me.
My husband was offered a position in New Jersey and had to leave immediately. The decision for me was if I would move right away or should I stay and finish my program which would complete in about 10 months. I decided to complete the term out and move as soon as I could after that. The time was not good for me but it was good for my children. My youngest was only in second grade and my oldest would be beginning middle school. So I did not want them to start and stop.
So we were off to New Jersey. I think because we (my children and I) sacraficed so much, my husband wanted to do something special for us. So he made sure that the house we bought this time was a step up. I considered it my dream home and knew that we were suppose to travel this way to get it.
Since that time my children grew up in this home, graduated from high school and college, have moved out and got apartments and jobs of there own. Since that time we have become grandparents. I became a corportate trainer and after ten years was downsized. So I am hopfully on my last transition now. I became a licensed insurance sales representative. As I became older I needed something where I could have some controll over my schedule; so I love having the flexibility of making money, but also being able to still have time to spend with my family.
My husband retired. And guess what? I never finished that degree; but its ok because I have no desire to do what I was going to with it. My two friends that I was associated with in Rochester still keep in contact. As I wrote this bio I wanted to put an emphazies on transition and change; because that is what life is. Don't hesitate to make decisions that take you out of your comfort zone. If you do, you may miss a blessing.
I am currently living in New Jersey and now trying something new. That is why you are getting this introduction from me. I have always been good at helping people so I hope I can use this gift and take it to a new level through writing.
