A Demon Sleeps In My Bed

Updated on September 8, 2012

A few months ago, I braved my life when bringing home a small demon. She was so small, near fragile behind the ice blue eyes. I deemed her M.I.A.

Her sharp fangs never pierced my skin, as I had been warned they would. At even a young age with a lifetime ahead of her, the public already deemed her a murderer like her brothers before her.

That night, and for several nights in a row, I placed her in her bed, with pillows, dolls, and blankets. The demon wasn't having that. Wailing and screeching at the top her lungs in the middle of the night was horrifying. Once cuddled in the bed, she was fine.

Now, risking my life, letting this demon sleep in my bed, with me! That is brave... She could bite. Gnaw. Attack. Kill.

After months of letting the demon monster sleep in my bed, my fears have grown. I now fear the God awful, horrendous smell of her gas. The kicking. The unbelievable loud snoring. The pillow snatching. And the overall bed hogging that this demon child has succumbed me.

But, I go to bed every night with my demon's good night kisses, and I wake up every morning to my monster's good morning kisses. Her gotty lines fear me not, as I will not have her any less. My monster. My demon. My daughter child. Is nothing less than a full-blooded, pedigree, also known as the American pit bull terrier.

I wouldn't have her any other way, than a demon sleeping in my bed.

Temperament of the APBT

The standard for all American pit bull terriers is that they carry the qualities of strength, confidence, and the zest for life.

And, with their goofy smile and determined face, these dogs truly have the best of personalities. Despite what the media protests. This breed is loyal till death; they fight to protect their pet parent even if it means their demise.

Pit veteran APBTs, have been appointed heroes for saving the lives of both children and elderly, and everything in-between.

As with any dog, of any breed, socialization is must, and with the proper human and animal socialization the APBT can be the most affectionate of family pets.

Like most terrier breeds, the APBT is known to carry the dog aggression quality, but again, that is a trait of terriers, not just the American pit bull terrier. And, on the other hand, human aggression is a trait that is far from the breed's characteristic. Even far into their deep, infamous history of dog fighting, human aggression was strongly frowned upon the fighting pit dogs.

The breed is very affectionate, as they will attack you with their kisses. They are eager to please their pet parent.

These dogs are both courageous and intelligent. They constantly surprise their pet parents with new and goofy tricks. They catch on quickly to training, whereas many terrier breeds are slower learners. Their immense want to please, their food obsession, and athletic builds, make them great candidates for obedience and agility competitions.

But, of course, no breed is perfect, not even the American pit bull terrier. We all know that one. This breed is definitely known for it's stubbornness and adamant appeals. A strong, firm hand is needed when dealing with this breed as with most bully breeds. Even with their eagerness to please, these dogs must realize that they are not the dominant party in command, but you, the human, are. As with any breed, if the leader is not established, the dog will step up to the plate. And, with such a strong, adamant breed, you surely do not want to have the roles confused.

Demons and Children

One day, my demon child took a trip. Her fist trip besides the two hour ride home. She rode an hour out to see a few children, ages 2 and 4. She'd never seen anything like it.

Children smell different than adults. They act different. They sound different.

As soon as the littlest one walked up to her, she sniffed a brief second before charging. Full force. There was no stopping my demon child. It was on.

Her mouth wide open as she leapt towards the small child. Nothing could pull her off as she molested the poor child with demon kisses.

Hours later I pulled my tired demon away, as we drove the hour back home.

That night, like any other, a demon slept in my bed to rest.

Save America's Demons

Why is it that a breed, like all other breeds, with a past, like most other breeds, must be hated and scorned?

These dogs feel, like any other dog, and they love like any other dog.

They have a bad history, but so does many other breeds. Why do we discount their histories? Why do we ignore that two fighters in history, Crack and Floss, set out and murdered top, recognized pit fighters of their day. Crack and Floss were both Airedale Terriers, not fighting 'pit bulls.'

The Great Dane, today's gentle giant, one of the most mildest of breeds, once wore the same title of 'terror.' Malamutes, German shepherds, Dobermans, and Akitas, as well as Wolf-dog hybrids, Rottweilers, and Chow Chows, all have either held the title or currently still do. But, even still, they do not have near the evil reputation of the APBT, who was once a good old family dog, owned by presidents, celebrities, and plain down-to-earth people.
