How to Get Tax Help and Save Money

Updated on January 27, 2012

Many people get Tax Help come Tax time.

Even if you are a person that understands how to do your own taxes, or have a system down for getting them done, you may be like others that wonder if they are missing out on more ways to save money with your taxes. Some people are absolutely confused and frustrated with their taxes and almost just wish the whole thing would disappear. There is help at every level out there, and you just need to know where to look.

Not everyone has a personal accountant, but I would recommend looking into it at least just to find out what the cost would be. You may be surprised at how economical it could be for what your needs are. The savings and money you may get back or generate would far outweigh any costs and save you a lot of possible headaches as well. If not an accountant, there are tax guides that are very helpful, and even just helpful friends and relatives. Beyond these options, what can you do? There is a good selection choices. Look into the professional tax preparers out there to meet your needs so that you can focus on what you really want to in life.   At some point, everyone needs tax advice and tips to maximize their money.

Tax Preparation Services and Tax Attorneys

Tax preparation services are a great option for many people because their cost is rather modest.  People that are wanting to just get their taxes completed usually aren't wanting to spend a lot of money on it.  Approximately fifteen percent of all tax returns use some kind of tax preparation service.  This is a good option if you are filing a return as a middle income individual or family.  These services can't be utilized in terms of representing you if a problem arises but they can be helpful if you do get audited.

Tax Attorneys

A Tax Attorney can provide excellent advice for your taxes and don't usually prepare your actual taxes.  They are very beneficial because they are schooled in taxes, tax laws, and are more familiar with tax rulings than the average citizen.  Many are great experts in litigation and interpreting the laws and breaking things down in an understandable language for you.  These attorney's can represent you if you need it in court or before the IRS.  Fees can definitely vary, and can be anywhere from a few hundred dollars per hour to the thousands.  Don't assume anything however, it is worth sharing your situation and asking for prices.

Enrolled Agents and Certified Public Accountants

Enrolled Agents can be helpful to your situation because they are accredited by the Internal Revenue Service.  Not only that, they have requirements for continuing their education.  They are certified by the Treasury Department and are able to represent your case to the IRS should an audit occur, or if you have an appeal.  Their fees range in the low hundreds.

Certified Public Accountants

The clients that CPAs usually work with are professionals and corporate executives.  They also help people with investments and financial scenarios that tend to be more complex in nature.  CPAs can be there for you year round, and are more involved than just at tax time.  Many have that as a goal, to maintain relationships year round with their clients.  So when it does come time to do taxes, they are already very familiar with you and your situation.

Certified Public Accountants can represent you if you have IRS proceedings.  Most charge by the hour.  Their fees can range from 500 dollars to a few thousand dollars.  Keep in  mind that not all Certified Public Accountants are necessarily Tax Specialists, so if that is your need, make sure to ask so you know exactly what you are getting for your money.
