Unexpected medical costs can be a budget wrecker, and plunge people deeper into debt. Having an emergency fund is one way to be smart and protect yourself. Three to six months of ones living expenses is a wonderful amount to have on hand.
* If you are needing help or advice with your debt, seek that out. Never be embarrassed to ask for help from a professional, like a credit counselor. Its satisfying to help people navigate out of deep debt. Its truly helping people, and there may be some tips that you just haven't really considered. They can go beyond giving advice and help to negotiate with some credit card companies on your behalf. This has helped many people in debt, and can help with things like getting a lower interest rate or better repayment terms on the debt.
* Consider paying things off (consumer debt) with a home equity line of credit. While this may not be the first choice, its a possibility for people to consider if you need help managing your debt. Depending on the amount of equity in your home, you may be able to get some low interest rates which also happen to be a tax deduction as well.
* Look around for low interest credit cards. Search high and low for best deals possible on credit cards. The best deals will have the lowest interest you can find. You are likely to have better luck with this the better your credit score is. If you have a solid credit score, that can only help in this regard. Look over the report from whatever credit reporting bureau you are using and look for any inaccuracies that might be harmful to your credit rating. Get those fixed.
Paying off what you owe as soon as you can and operating with cash or a debit card as much as is possible, is a good goal to have. You get to have and enjoy more of your money over the course of your life.
