Travelling around Australia for the last fifty plus years, Jan T Baillie can tell you of some of her favourite places to visit.

Keen birdwatchers can see lots of birds in the Rylstone area

Birdwatching is a wonderful hobby.

You get to visit some very interesting areas of your country and other countries around the world.

In Australia, we have some of the most colourful birds seen anywhere in the world. The birds around Rylstone are no exception.

My garden has had visits from yellow-tailed black cockatoos, sulphur crested cockatoos, king parrots, red wattlebirds, honeyeaters, willy wagtails, peewees, corellas, and shrikes. And we haven't been here for a whole year yet!

Why not come to our region for your next holiday?

Capertee Valley, mid-west NSW, Australia

Second largest enclosed valley in the world

The Capertee Valley is a large valley in New South Wales, Australia, 135 km north-west of Sydney. Being longer than, but about 1 kilometre narrower than the Grand Canyon of Arizona, it is the second largest canyon on earth.

A mere two and a half hour drive from Australia's largest city, Sydney, the Capertee Valley is little known, in Australia or elsewhere in the world, except by birdwatching enthusiasts.

More than 235 bird species have been recorded in the valley, including 18 threatened species. The birdlife here is generally quite different from areas closer to Sydney and the coastal areas of mid NSW.

The box-ironbark woodland which abounds here provides an excellent habitat for woodland birds whose numbers are declining elsewhere as the urban sprawl expands.

Common species which can be found throughout the valley include Red-rumped Parrots, Fuscous and White-plumed Honeyeaters, Brown Treecreeper, Superb Fairy-wren, Jacky Winter, Mistletoebird, Diamond Firetail, Restless Flycatcher, to name a few, and in the summer months you would also be likely to see Rufous Whistler, White-winged Triller, Rufous Songlark, Rainbow Bee-eater, Dusky Woodswallow and, in some years, large numbers of White-browed Woodswallows. from Wikipedia:

The Red Wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata), also known as Barkingbird or Gillbird, is a honeyeater; a group of birds found mainly in Australia and New Guinea which have highly developed brush-tipped tongues adapted for nectar feeding. The tongue is flicked rapidly and repeatedly into a flower, the upper mandible then compressing any liquid out when the bill is closed.
