Are you one of them?
Out of the two billion people who have been infected by hepatitis B virus, 350 millions have become chronic carriers of the virus. These 350 million people are at the risk of death from cirrhosis of the liver or primary liver cancer. These carriers also represent the source of the virus within the human population.
Living with Hepatitis B:
Patterns of Transmission
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is transmitted by contaminated blood and other body fluids. The following are the main patterns of transmission:
- From HBV - carrier mother to her baby at the time of birth
- From sexual contact with infected persons
- From close household contact with HBV carriers
- Through sharing needles or transfusion of contaminated blood
BroadRange of Symptoms
Hepatitis B virus infection can display a broad range of symptoms. Many cases exhibit no clinical signs of the disease, and the individual may be infected and unknowingly infect others. The most frequent signs include tiredness, weakness, and loss of appetite, headache, abdominal pain and fever. After a few days the individual will develop jaundice which is characterized by yellowish coloration of the whites of the eyes and the skin. This may be followed either by recovery or a progression to the chronic hepatitis.
Chronic Carrier
The immediate risk of hepatitis B infection is the occurrence of a fulminant hepatitis which is fatal. But the main risk is the individual will become a chronic carrier of the virus. Once you are a carrier and after a few decades, chronic HBV infection will lead to a progressive liver disease called cirrhosis, and liver cancer 25 percent of the cases.

Hepatitis B is Present in all Countries
Hepatitis B is present in all countries. Countries are classified as having high, intermediate and low endemicity based on percentage of their population that are chronic carriers of the virus. Sorry, but Asia and Africa are two continents that are mostly affected.
Children Born to HBV Carrier Mothers at Higher Risks
Children born to HBV carrier mothers are at a higher risk of becoming chronic carriers. There are no effective treatments available against long-term consequences of HBV infection. However, vaccination provides protection for your children against hepatitis B virus infection and its long term complications.
Vaccination Consists of Three Doses
Vaccination consists of three doses. The first dose is at birth or latter, the second dose is one month after the first dose and the third dose is six month after the first dose. This way, you will save your children from becoming hepatitis B carriers and death from cirrhosis and primary liver cancer.
