Online Education VS Devoted teacher

Updated on August 4, 2011

This is my first hub and I hope it would turn out nicely. I really love competitions not only because of the prizes that awaits the winners but mainly for the possible improvements it can cause on both parties. Because of this passion for epic battles and match-ups ( That's why I love boxing and fencing ), I decided to create a duel between the two most known source of basic education. Although experience will own these two contenders without even lifting a finger, I expect the head to head clash between these two competitive sides be a big BANG! Let me steal some of Michael Buffer's..Let's Get ready to Rumble!

Online Education has been popular today. A lot of individuals from all walks of life and from a wide age bracket choose this revolutionary way of learning. However, is it really worth your time, effort and money?

PROS

  • Education without the hustle

There is nothing more comforting than learning while you sit on your favorite chair in front of the computer. There is no need to be uneasy about the environment because you are inside your room. This will give you a better chance to focus more on the lessons. Although you might be distracted to do some other interesting activities like playing a cool PSP game or going out and having a walk with your dog, nothing beats the annoyance of bullies and talkative seat-mates at school.

  • Saves you time

Thew best thing about online education is that you are steps and a few click away from your virtual classroom. You will not waste your time in preparation, transportation and waiting for your professor to arrive. With online education, all you need to do is to turn on the computer, do a few clicks and you are good to go. In less that five minutes you can start learning relevant stuffs.

  • Concise

You will get what you want to learn. This is the principle of online education and it made the idea successful. If you want to learn how to draw, there is a course for you online that will only teach you how to draw and everything about it. Not only does you can maximize the use of time but most importantly, every penny that you are paying for the service is worth it and directed to your main purpose.

CONS

  • Expensive

I have seen some online education courses and most of them are quite expensive. The reason behind such price is quality. They are sharing ideas and concepts that you can't just find anywhere. However, considering the shaky economy that we have today, it is not a good idea to spend too much even for education.

  • Socialization issues

You can't personally meet anyone while in your course. Although, you can establish an online communication with peers that happens to be enrolled in the same program, it will only be limited there and the sense of having a deeper bond with them is unlikely.

  • Health risks

Several researches have proven that the radiation emitted by a computer can be lethal given enough exposure. Despite the fact that you won't observe its effects today, a few years from now, you can face some health issues caused by the excessive use of the computer

Professors are not only a source of knowledge. They are regarded as our second parent. Respect is due to them given they are guiding use towards learning relevant facts and being a better individual. However, there are still some issues regarding the effectiveness of their teaching method as technology tends to overwhelm the world.

PROS:

  • Experience-based teaching

A good teacher will not teach his students with what is written in the book. He knows that the information that one can gather from books can easily be outdated. Moreover, sharing his experiences and relating it to the topic will give the students a better idea on how the concepts are applied in real-life scenarios which will eventually be more than enough to awaken their interest regarding the topic discussed.

  • Not only a teacher

He is not limited to guide you towards intellectual growth. Most importantly, he will be there to help you be a better person. That is why the bond between a teacher and his students can be very deep that even if years pass by, students will still remember their mentor who helped them become what they are today. No technology can replace this kind of bond.

CONS:

  • Quality of teaching can be affected by several factors

There will always be a point in time where your teacher have a handful of personal problems that he needs to think about every now and then. This will eventually affect his performance in teaching. Despite the fact that he might be a professional and has been teaching for years, he is still human and is subjected to some challenges in life as well.

  • Human limitations

Humans are not perfect. Even the brightest minds in the world can be and was wrong. Your teacher is also at risk of such errors. Although he might be teaching the same topic over and over again for years, still there is a chance for him to misspell a word, pronounce it in an awkward manner and even give you some confusing ideas. Nonetheless, a good teacher accepts this limitation and will tend to be glad that his students saw through his mistakes because it only proves that they are carefully on track about the discussion and he is successful in grabbing their attention

After the fierce battle, one emerge victorious and that is none other than the devoted teacher. Technology has come far when it comes to making our life easy. This is certainly applicable to education as well. E-books, multimedia devices used in school presentations and even the internet plays a big role towards effective education today. However, nothing can replace the fruitful experiences that you are bound to have in school. Your teachers will not only aid you towards being intellectually sufficient but most importantly, they will be there at times when all the odds are against you. They are always ready to give you a hand. No inspirational book found on the internet can ever beat the motivation that they are always willing to provide. They are our mentor, friend and parent. I salute all the passionate teachers all over the world and their continuous efforts for a better society.
