Fun Cat facts!

So as you may or may not know cats are now the most numerous house pet in the US. I myself have 4 cats (so far) and love my little babies. I love learning everything I can about them and why they do what they do. So if you are a cat nerd too then this is for you!


  • Cats shake when they are in intense pain. If you ever see your cat shaking or shivering uncontrollably he needs to see a vet!
  • Cats have to have taurine in order to live. This is why you should never feed cats tuna exclusively.
  • Cats have to have fat in their diet because the body does not produce it on it's own.
  • Cats often clean themselves after being pet or played with by a human because it gets the smell of the human off of them and making their own scent stronger.
  • Outdoor cats only live to an average of 7 years of age.
  • You should have a litter box for every 1.5 cats.
  • Cats have 517 separate muscles.
  • Domestic cats sleep for 70% of their day and groom for 15%.
  • Cats with an extra toe(s) is called a polydactyl.
  • Ernest Hemingway had over 60 polydactyl cats at his home in Key West.
  • Ailurophiliais the love of cats. So if you are a cat lover you are a Ailurophile!
  • About 7% of cats snore.
  • Every cats nose is different from every other cats. Their nose patterns with all the little ridges and bumps are the same as a human fingerprint.
  • Almost all calico cats are female.
  • Cats hate citric smells like orange or lemon.
  • The more you talk to your cat the more they will learn to meow in response and the more talkative they'll become!
  • A group of kittens is called a kindle.
  • Sir Isaac Newton is credited with inventing the cat flap door.
  • A cats hearing is MUCH better than a dogs.
  • Cats do not have night vision. They can see better than humans in low level light because their eyes reflect more light but are just as blind as people in complete darkness.
  • Blue-eyed cats and ALL white cats are usually deaf. If a cat has one blue eye they are probably deaf in the ear on the same side.
  • Cat urine glows under a black light. Test it out if you think your cat peed in the house. It's the easiest way to tell.

  • Cats can make around 100 different sounds, dogs can make about 10.
  • Cats and humans have identical brains in the emotional area.
  • A cat can jump 5 times it's own height in a single leap.
  • Cats have scent glands on their cheeks.
  • In 1888 around 300,000 mummified cats were found in an Egyptian tomb. The cats were carried off to England and America to be used as fertilizer!
  • In Britain and Australia black cats are considered lucky!
  • In the Italian version of Cinderella the fairy godmother was actually a cat.
  • Kopi Luwak is a coffee in Indonesia that costs around $500 per lb. The berries are grown in an area where a wild cat called the luwak lives. The luwak eats the berries and they are later retrieved from it's feces then ground and sold.
  • Cats can't eat big chunks of food because they cannot move their jaws sideways.
  • Cats don't meow at other cats, only humans.
