Have you ever experienced those nights when you cannot sleep, when restlessness rules the am hours? Sleep finally arrives, but is filled with vivid images and dreams. Some say this is a way to disarm or understand issues of the day; and we wake feeling as if the "problem" has been solved. Then, there are the times when solace is fleeting because, there is no immediate solution.

Beware, this is a bit graphic. It is a reflection of empathy for others...but it isn't pretty.

LOSS OF THE INNOCENTS

Sometimes I feel with a depth almost unbearable

Sensing the world around me, so terrible

The suffering of living , breathing beings

Bewilderment, dismay, confusion, springs

From terrified eyes.

Beautiful one, innocence personified

Standing alone, frightened and wild eyed

Awaiting the strike, the blow that ends

Oh how I wish I could make amends

In darkness of night, while quite prevails

I see you, unaware of a fate, without fail

As your graceful beauty rocks with the sound

Your lifeless body falls to the ground

From an unexpected assault

Majestic, regal, wild and free

Run! Run now, from the likes of me

I bring no joy, and death does loom near

For your own sake, king of beasts

Run far, far from here.

In dreams my heart races

As I try to heal the wounds

Thinking I can no longer take this

Knowledge of what we have done

Caged and captive, strange world turned mean

Long ago, you played in a field of dreams

Natural, native, home where you belonged

Now, held prisoner, in a world turned wrong.

Sweet eyes disillusioned, beg for help

A pitiful ‘meow,’ a terrified ‘yelp’

They walk by, making jokes and hurtful jabs

As they use your body,

In the killing labs

Looking for answers not to be found here

Creating legal loopholes

Placing themselves in the ‘clear’

With your blood, the pain they have wrought

Thrown away, discarded, without a second thought.

Tears flow knowing the fear you feel

I awake with a start, thinking “is this real?”

"No, it’s a dream, it’s only a dream”

Then reality strikes! This IS as it seems

We cage, we torment, we torture and maim

Then punish you again, as we blame

When you try to survive

and respond with the same

Foul treatment of innocents.

Selfish beings are we

I pray for atonement

I long to set you free

Life takes on a new meaning

Purpose is unquestioned

Confirmed reason for being,

Actions ruled by the tortuous reality

I know, now I know

And I must act

To save them

To save us

To save me

From unrelenting sorrow

Beauty beyond our most cherished dreams

Couldn't sleep either? Such a profound poem, displaying the emotion and pain of those who suffer at our hands. Here, those who have the pleasure to read your work know how strongly you feel regarding the plight of abused animals. This poem is the embodiment of your passion and caring. Thank you for sharing.

An animal rights champion like you Kathy- that speaks for those sentient creatures that have no say- is a torch-bearer for all who care and want the mistreatment and cruelty to end. You must at times palpably feel their suffering. Your sensitivity and fortitude in the face of all the challenges is like a beacon on a high mountain for anyone that looks, to see in it hope, that one day all this will be greatly lessened or even end.}{

I think those thoughts, too, Kathy. Your poetry is breathtakingly real and empathy pours out of your words and deeds. I feel as bad for you as I do for the abused, forsaken animals. I realize that your "knowing" is also agony. If only it were a bad nightmare and it was possible to shake it off when awake. I wish I could do something or say something that was comforting, but you know too much. So, the best we can do is our best to help one animal at a time and stay aware. It is always a mistake to assume someone else will surely help this time. I was bitterly disappointed and enlightened in trying to get help for my "Auschwitz Cats" and horrified at the inconceivable callousness of neighbors I once thought were compassionate. I learned that the majority are only concerned about their own full bellies. So, I thank God there are those who not only see beyond their own needs, but consider the needs of others, their own...like you, Kathy. Thank you

Amy, my dear....i know you understand this and have acted, in so many ways, to achieve a better life for the innocents among us. I am hoping that your Mr. MacGregor is doing better or, at least, adjusting to his new reality...my thoughts and prayers are always with you as you travel through the complications which have been thrust upon you. Best wishes for your mother and daughter....and you...and hoping you are able to step away from the madness for a while. yes...

Sometimes the huge impact of this hits hard and fast..othertimes, I can separate myself from the immediacy of feelings and turn that energy into action..and, sometimes, i just have to take care of other things but...this poem is for all those forgotten or ignored or displaced or abused sentient beings who did nothing wrong except to be born of a different liniage than us. Bless you, Amy..I know that you do the very best at all times for everyone, at your own detriment and loss sometimes....and thank you for this sweet comment. Your friend, kathy

We have dominion over the animals and just as we are caretakers of the Earth,we choose profit and cruelty far too often. Shame on us. Beautifully put. Voted up.We forget that saving the animals is saving our very souls.

Lucky Cats profile image

Lucky Cats 5 years ago from The beautiful Napa Valley, California Author

timcgaa, thank you...glad you're sharing your stories...very heartwarming and sincere. Much appreciation

Bobbi..yeah, somewhere along the way we lost our way...and became incredibly cruel...almost hateful to other humans and to animals. To quote an infamous source: "Can't we all just get along?" Rodney King.

Thanks for the comment and always thought provoking words. Kathy

Kathy, I too have these thoughts, vivid images of suffering innocent beings and so many times I wish that I wouldn't because it is easier to look the other way and not become involved. Unfortunately it is not that easy. I have to believe that things happen for a reason, and for every heart wrenching image and story there is one of incredible giving and caring and salvation. Thankfully there are people like you that do something about the pain and suffering, making the world a little bit better for those who need our help!

Well put, this hub is quite telling, thank you for sharing this! Up, useful and awesome!

Lucky Cats profile image

Lucky Cats 5 years ago from The beautiful Napa Valley, California Author

Thank you my dear friend Kathy....yes Sometimes, I wish for 'ignorant bliss.' Wouldn't that be something? Sometimes, this sadness is heavier than others; last night; particularly difficult...so, the poem..hopefully, to continue to put out the word...cause some to consider..maybe rethink an old, outdated and incorrect position...We ust hear new ideas several times before we begin to actually ponder...could it be that there is a better, more humane and loving way? I always think so.

thank you for your kind and understanding words. Bless you for this. Kathy

Thanks for writing this Kathy.

All of us wander past the gates of hell at times, after all we don't have far to go. To respond to the energy you encountered there with these words, shows your ability to Transform, Transfigure,Transmute and Transend, the ugliness through action. Doing so assures that the gates of heaven are just as close for the innocent ones.

I applaud your passion, your heart, your devotion and I assure you they do too.

I've heard of christian before but this is the first time I saw the vidieo.

Okay, so I cried.

P.S. You may want to check out MicheleLynn. She just posted a hub about her cat Stewert I think you'll enjoy.

Thank you so much for such wonderful words of understanding and support of the animals of the world...they need our help through knowledge and wisdom...and you have these gifts. So very appreciated. Very touching Kathy, first poem I've read all the way through in over 20 years.

Subron, I hadn't noted, until you called it to my attention, that my profile doesn't have contact and other options. Those used to be available. I'll check it out. In the meantime, thank you for visiting this poem and I am anxious to read your story. When I am in Kansas at the animal sanctuary, there are cows right across the street; I feed them ears of corn and stalks left over from the harvest, and take them greens, etc. Gentle animals.

JY..I am both complimented and humbled. Thank you..

But, now I must ask: did you not read, entirely, my poem for my best friend and the one for Jamie...as well as "Welcome to the Human Race?" I thought you had..maybe, on second thought, not the latter but, yes, I believe you commented on the former 2...am I incorrect? If so, gee, gosh..well...

Hey, thank you for visiting and breaking a 20 year old pattern!! Always appreciate your intelligent and well reasoned response. Kathy (jk'ing, btw..)

Glad to) Anyway, I digress...thank you so much for the visit and fabulous comment which has me, now that I just put on makeup...LOL LMAO and everything else. Isn't that video just too much? Oh, Dim; thank you so much. I was in the depths of sadness when I wrote this; the only way to assuage that feeling is to act....which is what I've been doing; setting up several web / org. sites for my Lucky Cat Foundation; thus the lengthy absence from HP and FB. I sincerely appreciate your kind and caring words. Thank you.
