"Livestock," Wildlife, Circus Animals, Animals in Laboratories, Companion Animals

Have you ever experienced those nights when you cannot sleep, when restlessness rules the am hours? Sleep finally arrives, but is filled with vivid images and dreams. Some say this is a way to disarm or understand issues of the day; and we wake feeling as if the "problem" has been solved. Then, there are the times when solace is fleeting because, there is no immediate solution.

Beware, this is a bit graphic. It is a reflection of empathy for others...but it isn't pretty.

LOSS OF THE INNOCENTS

Sometimes I feel with a depth almost unbearable

Sensing the world around me, so terrible

The suffering of living , breathing beings

Bewilderment, dismay, confusion, springs

From terrified eyes.

Beautiful one, innocence personified

Standing alone, frightened and wild eyed

Awaiting the strike, the blow that ends

Oh how I wish I could make amends

In darkness of night, while quite prevails

I see you, unaware of a fate, without fail

As your graceful beauty rocks with the sound

Your lifeless body falls to the ground

From an unexpected assault

Majestic, regal, wild and free

Run! Run now, from the likes of me

I bring no joy, and death does loom near

For your own sake, king of beasts

Run far, far from here.

In dreams my heart races

As I try to heal the wounds

Thinking I can no longer take this

Knowledge of what we have done

Caged and captive, strange world turned mean

Long ago, you played in a field of dreams

Natural, native, home where you belonged

Now, held prisoner, in a world turned wrong.

Sweet eyes disillusioned, beg for help

A pitiful ‘meow,’ a terrified ‘yelp’

They walk by, making jokes and hurtful jabs

As they use your body,

In the killing labs

Looking for answers not to be found here

Creating legal loopholes

Placing themselves in the ‘clear’

With your blood, the pain they have wrought

Thrown away, discarded, without a second thought.

Tears flow knowing the fear you feel

I awake with a start, thinking “is this real?”

"No, it’s a dream, it’s only a dream”

Then reality strikes! This IS as it seems

We cage, we torment, we torture and maim

Then punish you again, as we blame

When you try to survive

and respond with the same

Foul treatment of innocents.

Selfish beings are we

I pray for atonement

I long to set you free

Life takes on a new meaning

Purpose is unquestioned

Confirmed reason for being,

Actions ruled by the tortuous reality

I know, now I know

And I must act

To save them

To save us

To save me

From unrelenting sorrow

Beauty beyond our most cherished dreams
