My Trip to The Deer Haven Mini Zoo
A Wonderful Local Zoo.
Recently I visited a local Mom and Pop Zoo in New Midway, Maryland. The name of the zoo is
The Deer Haven Mini Zoo. I was very impressed with this zoo. It is fully run and maintained by a husband and wife team. It is spread out over 4 acres of land. I was amazed at the number of animals that were available for viewing and feeding. I have to promote this zoo. I highly recommend this zoo as a must see in Maryland.
First of all, the price of admission is very reasonable. It is $6.50 for adults, $4.50 for children, with kids under 2 years of age entering for free. A family season pass is only $27.00.
I have to admit I was scepticle at first. This was a field trip from my son's middle school. We all paid $5.00 each for admission. We went on a school bus from his school on a Saturday morning. When we arrived I was amazed at what saw. The place is clean. There is plenty of hand sanitizer available. There is a port-o-john that is very clean as well. When you arrive you recieve a bucket of corn for feeding the animals. We also brought loves of stale bread as an added treat. This was totally acceptable. There are so many animals to view and a small petting area. The petting area animals consist of two adorable pigs. They love to be scratched under the chin. There is a miniature pony. A sheep, a goat and an Alpaca and Llama. We spent alot of our time at the petting area because the animals are so fun and nice.
In addition to the petting area there are numerous other exotic and not so exotic animals. There are Lemurs, that are so cute. We were able to touch their little hands. Their hands feel like velvet. There are Ostrich and Emu's. There are many different kinds of Partridge from all over. They have rabitts, and 2 American Squirrels, one is black and the other is grey. They have a big black Himalayan Bear. The bear is very sweet. He likes bread. I have to say the owners have really made this a kid friendly zoo. I was impressed with the extent that the cages and holding areas were designed to make them very safe for all visitors. The only animal you had to look out for was the Emu. He would peck you, and I mean they can peck, if you turned your back on him. He only wanted your bread or corn however.
As I kept walking and looking I was never ceased to be amazed at the variety of animals to view. They have a Capybara, which is a giant guinea pig looking animal. There are two different varieties of Coatimundi. There are Pantagonian Cavy, these animals look like a cross between a deer and a rabbit. They have 2 racoons. They have Peacocks, Turkeys, Geese, Ducks, and funny looking chickens with puffy white feet. They have a Bob Cat. They have a variety of deer from all over. The deer make a funny noise and run towards you because they want your corn and bread. There are many more animals that I know I have failed to mention.
As you can see, this is certainly a great way to spend a Saturday. We were there for 2 hours and could have easily spent more time there, but, we had another place to go for our field trip. I plan on returning to The Deer Haven Mini Zoo again very soon. This is where the zoo is located: 12312 Detour Road, Keymar, MD 21757-8824. You can visit their web site at deer haven mini zoo .com.
