Freddy Riley and his wife Ruth made their Innkeeping debut on Cape Cod in 2004 after evaluating the Cape’s Innkeeping business and visiting many of the Cape’s Inns for more than 10 years. The final decision was based on their mutual love of the Cape, Freddy’s flair for cooking, gardening and entertaining, their joint interest in decorating and the fact that they finally found the Inn that “felt right”.
Freddy, having retired from his Marketing career with an American Fortune 500 company based in England, brings an imaginative, European flair to the four course gourmet breakfasts he serves at the Inn, along with his English sense of humor, a love of gardening and the ability to fix almost anything in and around a house (a very useful skill to have as owner of a 200 year old Inn).
Asked how he acquired his cooking skills, Freddy explains that it was in his early twenties during a marketing campaign that landed him on a yacht for several months traveling to a variety of European ports. “The food on the yacht,” he says, “was rather abysmal so it became a matter of self preservation.” He explains that, determined to eat well, he bought a single cook book, The Cordon Bleu Cookbook and, page by page, prepared the recipes contained in that book for himself and the crew.
As he approaches his 6th season at Honeysuckle Hill, Freddy is pleased with the many new friends he and Ruth have made at the Inn. Many of the same guests return year after year, and sometimes several times in the same year. “Guests arriving at Honeysuckle Hill are welcomed to the Inn as friends into our home and invited to make themselves comfortable … in front of the crackling fire in the winter, on our screened in porch or in the splendid English gardens or hot-tub during spring, summer and fall -- with a glass of the complimentary wines or other beverages that are always available, a book from our library, and interesting conversation if desired.”
“Being able to be host to so many lovely guests has been a very gratifying experience,” adds Freddy. “I have always loved entertaining; Honeysuckle Hill has enabled me to enjoy so many of my interests and hobbies – meeting new people, entertaining, cooking, gardening, and decorating -- on a full-time basis. It has been a perfect fit for me and I am very delighted that our guests have so greatly enjoyed their time with us at Honeysuckle Hill.”
