Retro Review: Jeff Beck-Blow by Blow, Wired
by RetroReviewer
Jeff Beck is known for the Yardbirds, for Blues, and for putting Rod Stewart on the map. But in the mid-'70s, he put out a couple of albums that I never tire of listening to. Blow by Blow and Wired are amazing jam albums, very jazzy, very fusiony, with no vocals anywhere to be heard; these are just pure celebrations of the guitar. published 7 months ago
Retro Review: Midnight Run Robert DeNiro Charles Grodin 1988
by RetroReviewer
Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin don't generally end up in the same films, but this one actually works well. It has some very funny interactions between the two principles, which alone are worth watching this film to see published 7 months ago
Retro Review: Snow Queen Joan D Vinge 1980
by RetroReviewer
The Snow Queen by Joan D Vinge is a sprawling epic set on a planet that shifts its seasons only once a generation. This causes tremendous social and political upheaval, and this is the story of the struggle of the struggle of different factions to either cling to power or to usher in a new age. published 7 months ago
Retro Review: The Desert Island 10
by RetroReviewer
It's a favorite party question: If you knew you were going to be stranded on a desert island forever, which ten albums would you take with you? Whenever I allow myself to think about this, I agonize over my chioces and change my mind all the time. The beauty of HubPages is that I can cheat, and change my mind constantly, even after I publish this list. published 7 months ago
Retro Review: Genesis Solo Projects - Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins
by RetroReviewer
1970s Genesis, especially the Peter Gabriel era, generated some of the most magical and well-constructed popular music ever. But the excellent music didn't stop once bandmembers began peeling away one by one. published 7 months ago
Retro Review: 1970s Progressive Rock
by RetroReviewer
Some of the best popular music ever created, in my humble opinion, was 1970s Progressive Rock. Alternatively called Prog Rock, Art Rock, or Pretentious Crap (by those who don't get it, or don't have any romance in their souls), this music aspired to greatness. Oh yeah, they could also kick butt & rock out, when they wanted to. published 7 months ago
Retro Review: King of Comedy, After Hours - Martin Scorsese's Dark Comedies
by RetroReviewer
After cutting his teeth on brooding portrayals of New York street life in Mean Streets (1972) and Taxi Driver (1976), then giving us an Oscar-worthy turn from Robert De Niro in the heavy drama Raging Bull (1980), Martin Scorsese turned his hand to comedy, albeit of the dark variety. published 7 months ago
Retro Review: Dragon's Egg / Starquake, Robert Forward 1980
by RetroReviewer
The late Robert Forward was brilliant. His mind roamed the cosmos, and found strange, wonderful ideas to present to us mere mortals in the guise of science fiction. His two-book set, Dragon's Egg and Starquake, are a brilliant speculation about what life on a neutron star would be like. published 7 months ago
Retro Review: Big Trouble in Little China-John Carpenter Kurt Russell 1986
by RetroReviewer
If you're looking for deep, Oprah-style tear-jerkers or intelligent, complex plots, you won't get them here. This is just a fun, over-the-top romp by John Carpenter, exactly what you would expect from him. published 7 months ago
Retro Review: Golden Voyage of Sinbad 1973
by RetroReviewer
I don't know; it may be because I was 10 when I first saw it; it may be because it's a perfect artful blend of all the fantasy and sword- and-sorcery cliches you can think of; it may be because Caroline Munro is just so darn good at breathing. published 7 months ago
