Earlier this month, the world woke up to news that Sundar Pichai had been appointed as the new CEO for Google. The appointment is effective upon the completion of the planned restructuring that will see the formation of Alphabet Inc, a conglomerate for the Google company family.
Google will be a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc under the leadership of Larry Page and Sundar Pichai will take over as the new CEO of Google.
Sundar Pichai's Background
Born Pichai Sundararajan, Pichai is a 43 year old technology expert of Indian origin. He was born in 1972 in India. His mother was a stenographer and his father an electrical engineer.
He credits his interest in technology to his father who worked at General Electric Company and from time to time shared with him the experiences and challenges he faced at work.
What is Sundar Pichai's Education Background?
In early years, he studied at Jawahar Vidyalaya School and Vana Vani School for his class X and class XII respectively. For undergraduate studies, he earned a degree in Metallurgical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP).
Due to his stellar performance, he earned a scholarship to study at Stanford where he studied MS in Material Sciences and Engineering. He also holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Career Background and Achievements of Google's New CEO
Before joining Google in 2004, he had worked with Applied Materials in product management and McKinsey & Company in management consulting. His Achievements at Google include contributions to the creation of Google’s search tool bar, Google chrome browser and the development of the Chrome operating system for laptops.
He is also credited for contribution to the integration of chrome browser for Android, the world’s most popular operating system. He supervised the development of other products like Gmail, Google Drive and Google Maps.
It is believed that his appointment was informed by his tremendous contribution to the development of various products and his dedication and long service to the company.
