2012 The Year Not The Movie

Updated on November 22, 2009

mayan calender

Should we really worry about Dec 21 2012? Is humanity only around for 3 more years? Are we all dead men and women walking?

We all hear the different prophecies on how humanity will end. From the Bible predictions of the rapture and the Antichrist, to Nostradamus' prediction of the Planet Comet. We even can pick up a tabloid at the grocery checkout and read about newer versions of the end of the world.

The latest doomsday to grab our attention is The Mayan calender. The Mayan calender is actually a combination of 3 calenders. The religious calender, the solar calender, and the Long Count. I'm no scholar so I won't even try to explain this stuff. From what I gather it's the long count calender that is causing the problem. According to this calender the world ends Dec 21 2012.

Should we care what an ancient civilization thinks? After all they aren't even around anymore. How smart could they be if they couldn't survive? Plus if they we so smart where in thier calender does it predict their own demise?

On December 21, 2012 our Sun will line up directly with the center of the Milky Way. It's a phenomenon that the Mayans referred to as the "Sacred Tree" and it happens every 25,800 years. This event plus a few planets being lined up correctly will kill us all. So say the experts studying the Mayan calender .

Here's my take on the whole situation. Choose your end of the world scenario. Do the research and find the exact date it's all gonna end. Then plan on doing all the things you were afraid to do.

Go ahead rob a bank. They catch you it's not a long jail sentence. Why bother paying any bills for the last year. Matter of fact make more bills. Bang out those charge cards. Get more charge cards. Tell the collection agency to chill out. The world is gonna end soon anyway. Just think of the possibilities. All you have to do is make sure the world will end on a certain day.

Naturally you could go the other route. Invest in saving yourself. You can build your own bomb shelter. I saw plans for a 21-foot, 4-inch long by 10-foot shelter costing only $16,000 plus shipping. Not much room, but you'll survive maybe. Don't forget to stock up on food and other survival materials. Plus you better act quick. As 2012 approaches there may be a run on such items. Remember the toilet paper shortage a few years ago.

As for myself. I plan on living like the world will go on forever. However I'm not buying any Christmas presents for anyone in 2012. Just in case.
